Things I forgot about yesterday:
1. We saw our first Roadrunner! It ran across the road (go figure) and up a hill. Wiley Coyote, aka Larry, started to chase it for a photo, forgetting it was a Road RUNNER! No photo.
2. We saw the government at work in its normal state of ridiculousness! We stopped along the Rio Grande for our picnic lunch and there was a park worker with a water tank truck. He spent the entire time we were there, close to an hour, watering 4 little shrubs that, another government employee had planted (just a guess). Keep in mind we are in the desert...one that has had serious drought! The cactus are stressed and dying! There are signs in our room about conserving water. Are you kidding me?
3. I forgot to mention that we are staying in the first room we have ever stayed in, anywhere, with a recycling container under the sink, next to a trash can.
4. It was windy and freezing in the evening. Got to wear my down jacket and gloves.
Today...beautiful...72 degrees in the afternoon. We headed to the Eastern end of the Park and made a few stops on the way observing historical ranch sites and some hotnsprings along the way. At one spot, we saw many Javelina tracks, followed some, but no Javalinas to be seen. We did see several Roadrunners...yep, he chased one again...picture to prove it. This one was fairly tame as it was in a camping area. We saw a couple of large golden eagles, Larry saw a couple of deer, but no bears or mountain lions. We stopped for our picnic lunch along the Rio Grande and there were some crafts placed on large boulders with a sign that the money would go to the school in the village across the river, Boquillas, Mexico. We did see a sign that said buying items from Mexican citizens is against the law...posted by the Border Patrol. We saw two Mexican men across the river with a canoe and a horse. I waved; they waved back. Pretty soon, one of them began wading and crossing the river, then another appeared on horse back. They were checking to see if any money had been left in the jar by their crafts. The man on horseback left and Larry offered the "wader" a beer. He took it and brought me one of his wire and beaded Roadrunners. Very cool...we didn't break the law! Our amigo asked for a cervesa for his friend across the river and we obliged. We met two tourists, father and grown son, and asked them to take our picture. Of course, I asked where they were from and they said Georgia...just south of Atlanta...here's the kicker...the son had an Auburn hat on! He graduated in1997. SMALL WORLD! We have met so many interesting people along our journey. We are heading to Fabens, Texas (outside of El Paso) tomorrow for the main attraction of the trip...the original dinner site and destination for this trip...Cattleman's Steak House. From there, we were going to head to Santa Fe,NM, but winter is in full swing up there, so we may detour and take in a couple of places in Texas that some of our new travel buddies have suggested...Ft. Davis State Park and Palo Duro (sp?) outside of Amarillo... Will keep you posted.
