We awoke to snow and 25 degrees! The snow was light so we took a walk...cold but beautiful! We made another visit to Ft. Davis and had an informative chat with a volunteer about the fort. Lieutenant Flipper was the first black graduate of West Point...he was stationed at Ft. David and later court marshaled on grounds of embezzlement. It was later determined after his death that the charges were unfounded. Slick Willie pardoned him posthumously on his last day in office...one of his most honorable acts! Lots of neat artifacts including a pair of Apache moccasins that were beautiful! The snow subsided and we hit the road for Amarillo. We changed terrain several times during the drive going from high desert to the plains, oil well country to farm land and finally back into civilization! There were many times we could smell the oil! We saw a field of windmills and they were no more unsightly than the oil wells...being 'em on! Oil wells or burkas, take your pick! We really enjoyed the drive...Texas is BIG! The temperature never got above 25 all day and it was 16 when we arrived in Amarillo. We decided to save the canyon of Palo Duro until tomorrow and went straight to the hotel at The Big Texan, another one of Adam Richman's Man vs Food challenges. (a 72 oz steak to be consumed in one hour...free if you make it) Food won! The rooms are decorated in western Texas! Very cool! We went to The Big Texan for dinner, which was decorated with long horns, animal heads and of course Christmas wreaths over all the heads! What to order? Tough decision...we decided on the 24 oz ribeye for me and the 18 oz filet for Larry. We shared...lol! We were a little disappointed in our steaks at Cattleman's, but were not disappointed at The Big Texan! We made a pretty big dent in those steaks! We headed to our room, temperature...12 degrees...that's cold!
