Today we had a relatively late wake up call of 7.30 (though yet again jet lag had got the better of me, and I had woken at 5.30). After breakfast we then all met in the grounds of the hotel and chose the bikes we were going to use for the day. Kingsley (our guide) then over the next 4 hours took us on a bike ride over about 6 kilometres, taking in the archeological sites which make up the old city of Polonnaruwa. En route to the site we stopped off at a number of places of interest along the way by the old man-made water tank (reservoir), including a road side temple, where we observed a couple praying, and they then proceeded to each take a coconut and smash it, (the more bits it smashed into the better).
The medieval city of Polonnaruwa was built after the decline of Anuradhapura, and is still very well preserved, and comprises of many monuments, and buildings spread over a wide area, (many of which are adorned with carved faces and Buddhas). After visiting a number of the monuments and buildings, we ditched the bikes proceeded on by bus to visit a wood carving factory and then a local guest house for lunch
