We have enjoyed the luxury of our hotel in Alice Springs and it is hard to say goodbye!
The landscape is rocky and hilly as we head out of town. There is long, dry grass which is blowing in the wind. It is so sun bleached that it almost looks like it could be a frost!
There are hundreds of termite mounds along the sides of the roads and in the fields. They are probably between 50 - 100 cm high. Some of them have been dressed up with t-shirts, jackets etc...
We have passed what looks like holding pens for stock before they are loaded into trucks. Today we saw hundreds of cattle at one of the loading stations. We get excited by this change in scene. Small things!
It is around 30 degrees outside and pretty sticky in the car. The sun is intense. We stop at Devils Marbles which are granite boulders that have been created through erosion. Water gets under the layers of granite and they shed like an onion skin. We take a quick walk around the marbles, which are impressive and they spread over a very large area. There is little shade though and we don't want to spend too much time in the sun.
The Devils Marbles campground and it is all dirt and dust with very little shade. We decide to push on and head for Tennant Creek hoping to find grass and shade to pitch the tent.
As we approach Tennant Creek the landscape is a lot greener and there are lots of trees. We check into a campground and find a semi shady, semi grassy spot and set up our tent. Setting up the tent is hot sweaty work.
