After stocking up with supplies in Katherine (gas, food etc.) we head to Adelaide River. There is a lot more traffic on the road than what we have encountered so far.
We camp at Mt Bundy which is a working cattle station. It is already 30 degrees when we arrive and the campsites are pretty dusty. We find ourselves a shadyish campsite and work up a sweat putting up the tent. To cool down we head into Adelaide river (the town? consists of a service station, a grocer and a pub) and get a cold drink at the Adelaide River Inn (which also home to Charlie, a great big stuffed buffalo that was in Crocodile Dundee 1 & 2) whist the kids have a play on the spectacularly green grass.
Back at camp the wallabies come out around dusk every night. When we sleep we really feel as if we are in the bush. There are the wallabies eating all around, bats crashing into the trees, horses and lots of bird noises. The sounds seem to work for Emily who sleeps through the night for the first time on this trip. It is pretty warm at nights and cools down later in the morning. It is cooler when we wake up but as soon as the sun comes up (around 8:30 or 9) the temperature instantly jumps and we have to find shade, put hats on etc.)
Mt Bundy has a Brahman calf, ponies, peacocks and guinea fowl that wander the camp. There peacock has a beautiful long tail and likes to visit us during meals. He is quite a sight to see when he flies to the top of a tall tree. I am amazed by all the sounds the peacock makes. The 'horn' sound is hilarious!
Mark and William pull out their fishing rods and find a spot on the river but get no bites. Apparently the water is still too cold for barramundi. There are crocs in the river but we don't see any.
Every day the weather is in the 30's and it's hot. We have lunch by the pool twice during our stay. Emily is a little trooper, she spends lots of time in the water and when we take her out she makes her way back to the edge and wiggles her wee toes in the pool.
One night we barbecue lamb chops and have our first real experience with the flies. They are everywhere and we have to eat dinner in the tent.
We have our first campfires (it is so hot we have to wait for the temperature to cool in the evening before lighting them. Mark cooks on the fire and William loves toasting marshmallows!
One afternoon Mark heads in to Adelaide river and buys a bottle of water. You know it's hot when 1.5 litres is $3.50 off the shelf and $4.70 from the fridge. In this town even the red wine is always served chilled.
