Today we head to Litchfield Park. We pack lunch, snacks and water and decide to drive the back roads (unsealed) to Litchfield. We get a bit lost and see a lot more of the back roads than we intended. With the help of the iPad we make our way back into the main drag and reach Litchfield!
The park is filled with trees with thin trunks as far as you can see. There are lots of palms, tall, short and in between. We don't see much else other than a couple of buffalo.
First stop the magnetic termite mounds. These are numerous mounds that are long and thin and look like gravestones. Magnetic termites live above ground and so to protect themselves from the hot weather build their mounds so the thin sides orientate east to west and the wide sides north to south and allow them to stay cool. Pretty intelligent of the wee critters.
We walk over to the cathedral termite mounds. You might guess what these termite mounds resemble? There is a 5 metre one which is a pretty impressive site! We don't hang around for long as the mercury is rising. Time to find somewhere to swim!
Next off to the other side of the park and Wangi Falls. We pack a lunch, our togs, water etc. in anticipation of a walk to the falls. Turns out they are just a couple of hundred metres down a concrete path. They are pretty spectacular and pretty busy. We walk up what feels like a thousand stairs (covered in sweat droplets from previous adventurers) to the lookout and take in the beautiful view of the forest from the top of the falls. We then compete with the flies to eat our lunch. The flies have spurred us to move on from the falls so we devour some ice creams. William has a paddle pop! Mum and Emily tend to share the lemonade Icy Pole. Wouldn't be fair if she couldn't join in the fun!
We drive to Buley Rockhole which is a series of waterfalls and rock holes. We find a nice shady spot in the water where we all cool down. It is just what we need!
We then head back to camp, this time via the sealed road!
