The tent pack up at Edith Falls seems easy despite the heat. We restock our food at Katherine and drive the 30 km to the Nitmiluk campsite arriving around lunchtime. It's stinking hot and humid. We check out the campsite and are not really impressed but decide to stay anyway. We pitch the tent in what we think will be a semi shady spot (there's no grass) and head for the pool. After a dip and some lunch we return to find the tent in full sun (oops!).
There has been a bit more cloud cover in the area lately and fortunately one rolls over while we finish setting up the tent. Emily sleeps with an umbrella for shade.
We join a sunrise cruise up the Nitmiluk gorge. We are used to waking early but not getting up so are not sure we will be able to rise at 5:45. We make it to the cruise with time to spare. The cruise takes us through the spectacular Katherine gorge. Our guide is knowledgeable and entertaining so we sit back and take in the views. We motor through gorge one and then hike 400 metres and do a further boat trip in gorge two. This is a pretty good way to start the day.
We head to Katherine for some exploring. Springvale homestead is the oldest homestead in the Northern Territory and is well signposted so we head there. Turns out it is closed and has been for a long time. There are lots of signs saying private property and do not enter. It's strange and a shame that we can't see the building.
We eat a delicious lunch at the Finch Cafe. We share a rice salad, quinoa salad, ham & cheese toastie, banana bread and brownie. Mark has an aboriginal tea garnished wit frozen berries. Super refreshing. This place is a great find.
The wallabies are everywhere day and night. They are super tame and as long as you are not chasing them they will just look at you. They join us when we eat dinner nibbling any new grass shoots. We are becoming used to having them and lizards join us every night in most of our campsites.
The highlight of this campsite is the pool. It is surrounded by lush green grass and lots of shade. There is a small rock waterfall that cascades into it. We spend a lot of time there.
Mark is not a fan of this campsite so after 2 nights we pack up and head to Katherine in search of a cabin.
