After being savagely attacked by swarms of sandflies at our free camp we headed towards the Fox Glacier, Kam was really looking forward to do a skydive here as its suppose to be one of the best places you can do it in NZ (I wasn't to keen!). Our first stop at Fox was the airstrip was to find the crazy skydivers....there was no one there at all!! We asked some people in the shops where they were and they said the weather was going to get really bad over the next few days so they just go home when its bad weather. Kam was quite dissapointed (I was relieved!!!!) So we decided to make our way up to the Fox Glacier itself. Now call me simple but I didnt have a clue what a glacier was really all i could picture was the picture on fox glacier mint wrappers (!?) anyway after a windy road up a dirt track we saw for ourselves what a glacier was!! It was amazing and we managed to walk right up to the terminal face of it, we were there in our shorts and t shirts facing this huge frozen thing, it reminded us of something from Superman!!! We then made our way towards Lake Matheson which is a famous lake where you can see the glaciers in the distance and they are reflected in the lake...unfortuantly it was starting to get quite cloudy by now and we didnt quite get a picture as good as we've seen on all the postcards!! We spent the night down on Gillespies beach, the weather turned quite nasty and it rained all night. We woke up and it was still raining heavily so we made our way to Franz Josef and hoped the weather would improve, unfortuantly it didn't and it poured down the whole day!!! Luckily we checked ourselves into the Top 10 park which had a nice camps kitchen in where we drunk lots of tea!!
The next day the weather had improved alot so we made our way to the Franz Glacier, because of the heavy rain the walk to the face of it was closed off but we did walk to a great view point and we must say that we think the Franz Josef Glacier was more visually stunning than the fox!! A good few pics later we made our way back on the road to head further up the West coast!!
