We really liked Cali, our first taster of a Colombian city. It was so completely against the expectations we had. A really modern area with trendy bars and restaurants, London could learn a new trick or two, plus the old town with churches and plazas and a great vibe everywhere. Not so keen on the Zona Rosa which is lined with cheap tacky Ibiza-style bars, but just two streets across and its like being in Beverly Hills!
Plus the weather was incredible...so hot and blue skies...in fact it was so hot we couldn't sleep! First night we drank in the cheap bars with an exceedingly eclectic group of Europeans including an extremely camp Frenchman who we couldn't understand, a Welsh guy, Bjorn the Belgian, a super friendly Swiss chap wearing a jaunty cap and Sara who had a throat infection. It made for an interesting evening on Avenida Sexta!
Refreshed from our fun evening out, we trotted around the Old Town sweating like Brits abroad. Tucked into some traditional Colombian fare of meat, rice, beans, squashed cooked bananas and a little white biscuit thing which comes with every meal and truly represents what nothing would taste like if you could cook it. Tried to buy some melons but discovered they were for display purposes only.
Treated ourselves to a swanky meal out and did a rather posh bar crawl around the posh neighbourhood which we followed up with much cheap beer 'giraffe' towers surrounded by drunken Cali locals on Sexta. Spotted lots of aforementioned false breastage and some famous hot totty too!
