The headphones helped last night until I started waking myself up with the music blasting from them. The bed was holy moly comfy!! There were no roosters and we both had a decent nights sleep - winning!
Boracay hasn’t had rain for a solid 7 days... well beth and Ellie has arrived so let’s put an end to that spell is it... it rained so much early this morning, all the more reason to stay in our comfy bed and binge on Netflix. We did surface around 10am ish and went out to have some breakfast, a clean eating smoothie bowl - yummy!!
We had our walking flip flops on today, we needed to get the les moving again so we walked to the top of the island (bare in mind that the island is only 7km in length) we still walked 5.6km up to Puka beach from our hostel.
It seems as though from the area where we are staying upwards to the end of the island it’s still under a lot of maintenance and building, the roads were a mess and there was one way traffic for a lot of it because they were digging it up to resurface it all but that was a mess this morning from the rain. The eco friendly tricycles are a pain here because you can’t hear them coming as they’re run on electric or solar panel. The tinny motorbikes with a d*** dastardly and muttley look to them shaking down the road you can see and hear for miles.
Had a rant today, it’s really annoying how they go on about this recycling and environmental friendly business, and tourists cant take bottles on boat trips at sea or you get charged a deposit to bring your bottle back to the shops to recycle when actually it’s the locals that are the main problem. I get that they may not be educated and they’ve always lived that way - Bla bla bla. But there are enough western organisations Plowright money and resources into these places to encourage recycling and beach clean ups now that you’d think the locals would join in. Plus they all have phones and social media and read the news paper or talk to tourists so how do they not realise that by cleaning up their crap will make tourists want to come more often and it will help their business?
Or why has the government not thought, I don’t know the poverty is high we have a lot of homeless people, if we give them a stick and a bag they clean up the streets and beaches we will give them a little from the environmental fee tourists are paying. That way they can afford to eat at least. Granted not everyone will do this but it’s to try isn’t it. Or use one part of a beach or field that isn’t being used to set up as a recycling yard and employee people if machinery is too much to swift through it. It’s a crappy job but it’s a job and it cleans the place up.
I just think there’s a hell of a lot western organisations going into these countries to do clean ups and plowing their business to educate people and improve waste and the government don’t seem to be implementing any forceful action for locals throwing their crap everywhere or changing their ways just a little. If you don’t recycle you get fined, simple. Doesn’t have to be a lot, they haven’t got a lot but that will soon change their mindset on how they control their waste when you take the money from them.
Bugs me how lazy they can all be just sat there staring out at passer byes all day in squaller when it could actually look a lot nicer than it does.
Rant over......
We did see purple eggs today, lots of them too! Maybe they were produced by the green chickens that they have in Bali?
The walk to puka beach was long and sweaty even though it was cloudy.
The sun did make an appearance though and puka beach was beautiful, much quieter than white beach and the sea was so blue! But the wind was high so we didn’t get in. We both seemed to look up at the same time and you would not believe it but Sonja an Austrian lady that was on our boat In Lombok to Flores back in October walked passed us, couldn’t believe or eyes the guy that she was waking with thought we were looking at someone else but he called her over and we got talking. Literally could not believe or eyes! What a very very small world it really is!
They sat with us for a while and chatted, we left a little earlier than them as I really needed to pee and if I’d gone in the sea they would have definitely known what I was going in for, I could have got away with it if it was just Ellie. Haha. So we left and we said we would meet this week for a drink.
A quicky pee and a walk back to the hostel. Both our feet were aching once we got over half way to the hostel, it was time to stop and have a beer! We had earned the calories and didn’t drink yesterday either. What more excuse could you possibly need?
We stopped along white beach but the far end where it was much quieter and the sea was super calm because it was shaded from the wind of the east coast. We found our spot for tomorrow!
We got back to an ice cold room because they keep leaving the air con on, did our daily squats and push ups before getting ready to go grab some grub! We were going to nonies tonight, everyone online raves about it so let’s see...
They were right, it was delicious! We are getting full very quickly these days though. It’s a good sign because it must mean the tummies are shrinking. When it was time to leave we were in fact not able to leave the rain (surprise surprise) was crazy so we stopped in by the hotel where we were for a drink and watched them make amazing cocktails.
Also watched a man hoover up rain... Asia. I have no words for this continent sometimes, well a lot of the time actually.
When it had finally stopped we headed back not able to fit anything else in our bellies we called it a night but it tried to start raining again, trying to dodge the funeral walkers to get to cover we managed to jump in a shop just in time for a spray and then back to the hostel before the heavens quite literally opened up and didn’t stop for a good hour. It’s preparing us for home I’m sure of it!
Noticed here that they have a lot of lobster restaurants where they showcase what you eat in the tanks outside but... I’ve never seen it before, they grow the lobsters in plastic bottles like empty 1 litre Coca Cola bottles, I googled that it’s to stop them from fighting one another for territory and they’re known to break aquarium glass they’re so strong. I’ve never seen this before personally, they don’t seem to be able to get through plastic boxes in any other Asian street market but here they’re grown in bottles... sad and strange.
