So today went on the scavi tour in the morning. Basically we went through the catacombs under the Vatican. We saw ancient Roman and Christian burials culminating in the chapel of St. Peter then into the actual crypt where we saw St. Peter’s jaw bone where it was buried originally and still resides. It was very cool. Especially being in the tiny 16 person chapel under St. Peter’s basilica and seeing St. Peter himself.
After that we went to the St. John Lateran Basilica. It was the original home church of the pope built in the 300s. The senate doors now hang there that was cool to see.
We also went across the street and saw the Scalia Sancta. Theses stairs were removed from Pontius Pilate’s home in Palestine around 200 AD and brought to Rome. It is believed these are the stairs Jesus would have climbed on Easter weekend. All very cool but I’m just about holied out. I think that was our last major religious site.
Anyway we are back at our apartment early which is good as there is a huge demonstration outside including a bunch of screaming communists right outside our window. Anyways luckily there was no violence or trouble for us but I can still hear them screaming and chanting at each other outside.
