So today we completed our tour of Florence. We started the day by heading to the duomo square. We started with the museum which contains most of the original art from the cathedral. The highlights definitely were amazing. Donetello’s Mary Magdalene, Michelangelo’s pieta, burneleschi’s bronze doors.
I am starting to realize that donettello is likely my favourite sculpture. There is usually just one subject. It usually captures the reality of the subject rather than idealized. But it also captures more the essence than the details.
Anyway from there we waited in line an hour to see the inside of the duomo. It was a major disappointment. But the outside is very beautiful. I like the amount of green marble on it. It makes it a bit original.
We also went inside the baptistery. It had a beautiful tiled and gold ceiling. And lovely everything.
From there we went to to one of the minor Medici palaces. (Ricardo) it had the very beautiful fresco that is in the opening credits of the tv show Medici with Lorenzo as a child. Other than that it was nice but not that exceptional.
However it was on our way to the Mercato, which did provide an excellent and cheap lunch. And that is exceptional.
We then went through the d section of the city browsing and seeing what there is to see. Then we hoped a bus to piazelle Michelangiolo. It was very good. It had a view all over Florence. However, even with the view and quite a few people it still had a spacious and somewhat quiet feel. Though I’m not sure Trapper thought it was quiet.
Anyway then we headed home to cook supper.
All in all a shorter day but still saw lots. Tomorrow we will do a day trip to sienna.
