Wow today was a busy day. We started at the Uffizi gallery. It was enjoyable probably because it was not busy yet. There were many pieces of great artwork but there were no single show stoppers. So it was enjoyable but I don’t think I would put it in the must do category that most people have it in. I think Trapper agrees.
Then we went to city hall. It was a cool quasi castle kind of thing with a big audience hall but not totally my cup of tea.
We then went off to the Santa Croce church. We say Michelangelo, gallelao, and Machiavelli or at least there tombs. We wander around the church a bit and ended up leaving the backdoor into a leather working school where we bought some things.
Then we went to the bargello museum. I loved it. It was somewhat small sculpture museum but it had many donnetello’s including the first nude since antiquity. It is in an old castle and I quite liked all the sculpture.
From there we decided to stroll back through the main part of town. Before we got to the Main Street we saw Dante’s house so popped in for a visit. It was not worth the time, other than we watched a busker our a window do hallelujah then despasito on the cello.
We then continued our walk around downtown part of it narrated by Rick steves. Saw where savanarola burned art and then he was burned.
Our walk also brought us to the pint Vecchio. The old bridge. It was nice but I’m not sure I get all the people clambering over it.
We then did Pitti Palace. It was the Medici huge palace. It contains several galleries, Royal apartments , treasury, and gardens. We did not do the gardens but our ticket is still valid for tomorrow so we will see if we get back there.
And that was our long day. There were many stops but each was short. My highlights were the bargello and the leather works.
