Well Sandakan isnt much better than Kota Kinabalu. Everyone stares at you and there seems to be a high gay population here. Ive twice been winked at and called sexy boy! The hotel is ok, its a bit out of the city centre but the room is big and the TV channels are good. There is nothing much to do here but we have tried some of the local cuisine which may as well of been Indian. But it was cheap and good.
Yesterday we went to the Sepilok Orangutan sanctuary which was amazing. They do feeding times at 10 and 3 but your not guaranteed to see anything. We waited for 30 minutes staring at the trees when 2 young Orangutans came and ate bananas and then swung off into the jungle. It was hammering it down so we were lucky to see any. We stayed longer than anyone else and on our way out one Orangutan was stood on the walkway in front of us. It stared at us and we stopped about 8m away from it. Rikki stuck her tongue out at it and it ran towards us. All it wanted was to steal Rikkis Poncho that she had in her hand. It smelt it, put it on, did a forward roll and then amazingly went up to Rikki and hugged her leg and sat on her foot. Hands down the best moment of the trip so far. It wont get beaten either I dont think. It soon got bored and waddled off into the forest.
The next feeding wasnt until 3 so we walked about 2 miles down the road to the Rainforest Discovery Centre. It had raised walk ways through the forest but the only thing we saw was 2 woodpeckers. So we headed back to the sanctuary, watched a short video, then watched the 2nd feeding. We again were pretty much the last people to leave. We saw a mother and its baby which was cool then on the way back we encountered another one on the walkway. More people started running towards it to get a photo which made it swing away.
I took 100's of photos and videos so if your not keen on Orangutans then you wont wana see our photos! And if you dont like Orangutans we dont like you :)
We dont have anything else planned for the next day except doing nothing! We fly back KK on Saturday, then Saturday night we fly to Indonesia. Next stop Jakarta!

Anne Looking forward to seeing your photos but also getting a good idea of where we do and don't want to go. Also you sound to have encountered quite a lot of rain on your trip. Did the Orangutan give Rikki her Poncho back? Rainforest Discovery Centre sounds exciting!! We can see woodpeckers in our garden. Looking foward to hearing from Jakarta.
Judd Yup the Arabian Adventure is over and we are back home! Enjoyed Oman, but seen it and done it. The hotel was good, supposed 5* and will be when its finished (!!!) but was so remote. Shame we werent in Muscat, but were about one hour out. Borneo sounds awesome. The shangri-la is still on the list at KK though! Do be careful in Jakarta though.......shame you didnt have time to get down to Bali. Never heard of Santa ?? in PHL, so need to look that one up. Keep the blogs coming. We love 'em. Well need to go and look for another holiday. Missing you both xxxxx
