Naples would have to rate as the filthiest, dirtiest, disgusting,,run down,,shambolic city I have ever been in. The streets are something out of a third world country. Quite often we were down to first gear to pick our way down some of the "roads" which pissed off the locals somewhat as they just don't seem to care what the surface is like. For them there is only one speed and that is as fast as they can go at that moment in time. Once again Mr Garmin GPS did a wonderful job in taking us down roads that I don't think are actually on the latest street maps. Anyway he finally got us to Pompeii. What a spectacle. Acres and acres of ruins. Two thousand people lost their lives when Mt Vesuvius erupted on the 24th August AD 79.( Not quite sure how they know it was the 24th). The work that has been carried out to recover the city is quite amazing. The lava flow came through the village at about 65kph so I will leave it up to your imagination as to the destruction it caused.
Found this wicked campsite once again perched on the side of a cliff overlooking the water looking back to Naples which actually looks quite nice from15kms away.Betsy quite likes this site as she has got a lovely view out of her back window across the harbour.
Tomorrow we are heading further south down the Amalfi coast
