Sunday 7th December
Cool overcast morning with the threat of rain.
After Mal posted his previous BLOG it was back to camp for a cup of tea and a slow and steady pack up - today was Kangaroo Island day - sort of like a low level holy grail.
Well we got the tent packed up and then the rain came to wet everything before we had time to pack it into the trailer. Oh well it will dry.
We had identified that road 51 would take us across to the main road South and then we would just sail on down to the ferry - all easy peezy.
The road was wet and Mal was cautious with the big knobby on the front - we didn't want the front end to slip out - so we were a bit slow and the Sunday morning paper run or bakery shuffle was running hot, so we had traffic behind us all the way to Clarendon - Mal would pull over where possible and let them fly past, but their would always be another volley of Sunday shoppers in short time.
As we cleared Clarendon the traffic dropped away and the run through to McLarenvale was more relaxed as the road dried but it did not get any warmer.
We refueled in Willunga and Mal had a chat with an older lady who liked the idea of a camper trailer for her pushbike - well she agreed that might be pushing it all a bit too far.
On the way to Cape Jervis, the road runs down a small range into a picturesque town called Yankalilla and Mal observed it was an attractive place to come back to some time - the road then unfortunately runs across to a place called Normanville - maybe where the famed couch potato Norm hails from - as the road turns and heads South, one can look to the East and on a ridge is a sort of developmental parasitic growth that looks like it is based on numerous repetitions sudoko box - it is amazing what money with very little taste can do to the landscape -
We actually arrived at Cape Jervis in time to catch an earlier ferry, so we got over to the island a couple of hours earlier than we expected.
Of course its blowing a hurricane, the clouds are low and damp and we stop in to the visitor centre where we meet a young lady called Kelli - well she was very helpful - so now we are rejigging our plans for the island - it will of course depend on the weather as to how long we can brave the elements before we turn Eastward and Northward for the long trek home.
For tonight it is a foreshore site on American River - huddled in the shelter shed with a BBQ and a bunch of lamb chops - yum.
The yuppies go to wineries on Sunday afternoons
And carve around the vine encrusted hills.
They all park together in lots of 24
All the groovy hatches, right at the cellar door
