We all met up one last time for breakfast in the hotel & then said our goodbyes. Boomer is driving to Duluth, V & L have an early afternoon flight home to Nth Carolina and Lemon is staying one more night at Jim's before heading to Texas. We will all meet up again in San Diego.
We packed up and checked out. Setting the GPS to avoid tolls and highways we set off pretty much due south for Oklahoma City. A short distance out of town we saw a jet taking off which Pete was sure was SOFIA (stratospheric observatory for infrared astronomy)
The highway number signs have a cool motif of a covered wagon drawn by cattle on them, very cute. The roads we took were mostly through rural townships, cattle, corn and soy for the most part.
Two and a half hours into today's drive we passed over into Kansas for our first time, not much changed scenery wise :-) Again the terrain is more rolling hills than plains.
We stopped for fuel in a middle of nowhere town and their pumps were messing up. We left unsure if the charges went through once, twice or not at all. We have the number of the owner so will call him if it goes through anything but correctly. While there Pete cleaned the bugs off the windscreen, less than five minutes later it was again caked in dead bugs, there are lots of bugs in Kansas lol
We passed an army base with a couple of tanks displayed at the entrance and we saw several apache attack helicopters flying in the area. There was a lone oil Derrick which wasn't pumping as we passed and near it a small fracking set up.
We stopped for our usual late lunch at a park which had a water pump proudly labeled as 99.96% pure spring water. Not much further on we saw a Google car with the roof mounted camera, not too many properties out where we saw it so I'm guessing it was a slow day for that driver. We started to see more oil derricks around Wichita.
We saw quite a few small - medium sized Hawks of some sort today, many on the power poles along the way. Other than them we saw some squirrels and a kamikaze mouse who went under us, got skittled but not actually hit by the car and then sort of got up, shook himself off and ran back the way he'd been trying to come from! In addition to the usual roadkill; coons, skunks, porcupines etc Pete saw an armadillo.
It's been a gorgeous day, temps in low 30's and blue skies with few clouds.
The temp had been dropping then it started to rise again to 27 C as we approached Oklahoma City, not sure what that was about lol
We checked in & went shopping so I could cook dinner before we crashed out for the night.
