Scorpion Delight!!
Ok yesterday I had the most fantastic day visiting the Great Wall of China. When I got back to the hostel I wondered what to do next.
I was so tired that I could have gone to bed straightaway, but my battle against jet lag told me I shouldn't be going to sleep at 7pm.
I was chatting to a French Canadian bloke called Joselyn at the hostel and he said he was going to a night Market where you can try delights such as scorpion.
This seemed too good to miss so before I knew it, I was showered, changed and ready to take on any weird culinary delights on offer!
What a fantastic experience this was! I started off with some snake. The price was 20yuan (£2 approx) and we managed to barter down to 5. Joselyn said he's not used to bargaining, but luckily he was in the company of the original Mr Bargain Hunt!! He could speak mandarin so he translated and I told him what to barter.
Next on the list was scorpion. I took a deep breath and just put the whole thing in. I somehow managed to spill some scorpion juice on my White Forest shirt.
The weird and whacky foods continued as I later went for some Cat & Dog (sorry for any Dat/Dog lovers, but I'm in China, what do you expect??!)
We then hit another Market which had bigger and cheaper scorpions!! I had eventually eaten 6 scorpions. The bigger they got, the more vial they tasted!
I have some great pictures and videos of the whole experience, but uploading off my camera is pretty difficult.
When we got back to the hostel we started chatting to two other blokes Randall (New York) and Juaquin (Argentina). We decided to start up a game of poker which I eventually won (loose cannon strikes back!!)
A perfect end to a perfect day.
