Windjana Gorge 24/6/15
Plenty of 4WD buses starting up early which helped get us on our way this morning. We've been looking forward to attempting the notorious unsealed roads of the Kimberley. Our journey this morning took us into the Napier Ranges via Leopold Downs Road to Tunnel Creek , a 750 mt tunnel or cave, the oldest in WA. It's the remnants of the Devonian Reef, the sea which once stretched from Derby to the Kimberley's. Instructions were to bring swimmers, foot ware and a torch as we would be wading through knee high water in places. The staligtites were enormous, some hanging like a massive branch finishing with a flower bud like formation. The temperature was very ambient in the tunnel.
We had heard various reports about Windjana Gorge, but one has to make up their own mind! Nice, but a little ordinary after our cruise on Geiki Gorge at Fitzroy Crossing. We did enjoy the 7 km walk by the Lennard River which flows through the gorge, all the while keeping our eyes out for crocs. They are freshwater crocs and there were plenty basking in the afternoon sun.
