Derby 19/6/15
Sunsets on the jetty at Derby are special, worth ordering fish and chips and downing with a beer while the sun is setting. Derby is on a peninsula surrounded by tidal mudflats which seem to stretch for miles.
Our tour highlight and main reason for a Derby stay was a seaplane flight to Horizontal Falls on Talbot Bay - exhilarating! Our flight over the mainland before approaching the Buccaneer Archipelago was amazing. Many natural patterns created on the mudflats by small waterways, some appearing to resemble wily old boab trees . After shark feeding ( nurse sharks) at the pontoon, high powered boats took us between the narrow vertical rocks ( the wider being 25 mt separation) directly over the falls numerous times. These falls are tide dependant and generate massive flows between vertical rock faces into the two lakes. Our lunch was freshly caught barramundi BBQ'd to perfection with crispy skin served with fresh salad. Steve took the opportunity of a chopper flight above the falls and is still dreaming about it! We achieved what we came for and it was certainly worthwhile. We are now at the Gateway to The Gibb River Road.
