Matt and Ant's Travels
Hi
This is our last day in Vava'u before travelling back to the mainland and then on to Sydney after a couple of days. We spent the last 2 days on board this yacht (called Orion)owned by an American who has moved here over 20 years ago and now lives here with his wife onboard this floating hut! The 2 days were pretty amazing, the yacht is a trimaran and so has 3 hulls making it very stable and allowing for us to do som eof the sailing! On the first day we went to this island about an hours sail from the harbour where we dropped anchor. On there journey there was baskets of local fruit to eat which was nice and lined our stomachs for the walk we had planned for the island. We swam ashore and walked around theisland and then up to the 100m peak where there was a past queens tomb and an amazing look out over some of the eastern vava'u islands. On return to the boat we swam around a very vibrant coral reef with thousands of fish everywhere, the coral wasn't great but there were so many fish we didn't really get a chance to look at the coral! After lunch we chilled for a while on the boat with lunch included and then sailed back, all the time trailing a fishing line behind the boat in the hope of a catch! We had no such luck but had more snorkeling time n return to the harbour and saw some little baby nemo clown fish which was cool!
On the second day we sailed to a different island where at low tide the two islands are joined by a thin strip of beach forming an S shape (they are Ngau and Pau in case you want to look it up!). Fortunately it was low tide and we could do the walk and we got some awesome pictures to show for it. Just before lunch we did some more swimming at set sail after a post lunch break. Just after setting sail we had a bite on the trailing lines, it was a biggie, and after 20 mins of trying to pull this fish n we eventually landed a baracuda nearly 5 foot long and weighing about 30kg, it was huge! A great way to finish our day having been trying to catch a fish for most of the holiday we had to wait till our last day and last chance to catch it! The excitement really drained us as the evening was spent playing cards and getting an early night! Just having the flights to look forward to the next day!
The flights were a bit of a hassle, we were woken by the airlines at 7 to tell us our flights were cancelled and that we should get ready now as put us on standby! Fortunately we got a flight at 1.30 a bit earlier than our other flight but didn't really matter so long as we could actually get off the island. Anni flies out of Tonga tomorrow early in the morning and I follow her the next day, where she plans to do the Sydney Harbour Bridge walk on the day there when she is by herself. I'm sure she will fill you all in on that when she has done it!! Bye for now ...
