Matt and Ant's Travels
Today was a day I will never forget in my life and I just know I will not be able to explain in words just how amazing it was. It was finally our chance to go whale watching and apparently we might be able to get in the water and swim with the whales. We got to the boat at about nine and set off in the search for whales. Within 30mins we had seen dolphins and were all getting really excited when we suddenly saw the water hovering above the sea where the whales had just blown out. We travelled over to where they were and sure enough there were 5 males swimming around just beside the boat. They are truley wonderful animals. We folloewd the whales for about an hour watching them play about in the water before finally the woman in charge said the whales were used to us enough to get in the water. Only 4 people were allowed in at a time and I personally was still pretty scared and was quite happy to let the others go first. Matt was in the first group and in they went. The whales were amazing and started playing in the water around the boat Matt came back and told me he could see four huge whales all at different levels in that water right beside him. He was completely awestruck! We carried our sailing around the whales when suddenly a german boat went sailing really fast right into the centre of the whales. As you can imagine they were not impressed and the biggest Whale came up out of the water a made a huge grunting noise at the boat. Our skipper had a right go at the as well and told them to leave the whales in peace. They left and so did the whales a short time later. The thing about our boat is that it never once got in the way of the whales. It always came up to the from the side so they knew we were there and did it very slowly so we didn't alarm them. Also at no time did the boat chase the whales. It was completly up to them if the wanted to swim away from us. So the five whales left us and it was quite annoying as we had just got them used to the boat and they were being really playful so none of us were impressed with the germans. We carried on sailing out to sea when we saw the mist above the water again. This time it was a female with her calf. They were so great to watch as the baby kept on jumping out of the water it was so cute. It was my turn to get in the water next and I was really petrified but thought if everyone else is able to do it why shouldn't I! The whales were quite stationary near the boat and so we let down the back of the boat and jumped in. unfortunately they were gone before we managed to see them so we swam back to the boat. This happened twice more and just as we were about to give someone else a turn they came and lay in the water just by the boat about 10 feet down. In we got and as I looked ahead there was this huge whale as big as the boat just in front of us. It was the most amazing sight I have ever seen. You just feel so calm in their presence...wow. That time we didnt even get the best view but we had seen them so we let other people have a go. Matt went in next and got an amazing view as the whale and her calf were right by the surface of the water and they were about 5 feet away. The rest of us were pretty jealous! I got in a few more time and each time was just as special..I felt so privilaged to be able to do this. We were about to leave the whales as the female was going to start feeding and our guide said we would have one more swim before we left. We all managed to get in as there were only 5 of us that wanted to and there was the whale about 5-10 feet away from me. The baby was lying just under the Mum and is was the most amazing thing to watch. We stayed with them in the water for about 10 minutes before we could see they were moving off. The baby swam first and we got to see it up really close as it swam right next to us. Words really cant explain how awesome this was!
It was pretty late in the day and we thought we were just heading back to base but the skipper said he would take us to a place called the mariners cave first. This is a cave where the entrance is below the water and you have to swim a metre down and about 4 across all under water before surfacing in the cave. We were all pretty nervous but were with some very experienced divers. We jumped into the water and our guide went first followed by Matt. I waited until I could see their flippers which looked a very long way away before attempting to go through. It was so cool. I litterally swam under water and entered this cave. I never thought I would have the guts to do it but I did. When you were in there is was pitch black and there was air but there is no opening to the air outside apart from the under water entrance. It is pretty freaky but we all mangaged to get inside. Getting out was a lot easier as we had done it once and you could see the sunlight so you just had to follow the light. It wasnt like the way in where you are swimming into a black hole! This is something I may never get to do again but I have done it and Im really glad I got the chance to try. The professional diver with us exited the cave via the second entrance which is about 16 feet down and takes about 30 seconds to do. I was going to attempt it but thought i should just stick to what I knew. What an amazing day. When you see the pictures you might get some idea but i just cant quite explain how much I love it here!!! I have to go as the place is closing but I will try and tell you about todays adventure in the morning. Its been a good day all Ill say is that we hired a boat and shipwrecked it! Speak soon love you all xx
