Southwestern Excursion
We drove from Flagstaff, Az to the south rim of the Grand Canyon today. A worker at the hotel recommended that we drive up through the forests on Hwy 180. She also recommended the National Geographic imax film outside the entrance. We took her up on both suggestions and they did not disappoint. The imax film was great and lasted 20 minutes. Afterward we walked over to Wendy's for lunch. While I was standing in line I saw this guy & thought, "That looks like Mike Vaughn." (Someone that I work with. ) Well low and behold it was Mike Vaughn! Crazy to run into him here hundreds of miles away! We headed into the park and it was busy. We decided to skip the visitor center since the parking lot was full & drive straight to our lodge. We were staying at Maswik Lodge. We checked in, but our room wasn't ready. So we took a bus back up to the visitor center. The south rim has a large complex of lodges, restaurants, train station, mule barn, campsites, shops and visitor center. There are 3 bus lines that run people up and down the rim to the various stops. After looking through the visitor center we decided to walk back to the village along the rim trail. It was a 2 mile walk along the rim with various stops along the way. Sounds easy enough. But, all I can say is by the time we were finished I was glad Lin brought his 1st aid kit in his back pack. During the 2 miles a boy managed to get cactus needles stuck in his fingers, another one threw up, and then the boy with cactus needles had a massive spontaneous nose bleed. We were a mess. We made it back to Maswik Lodge, which was awesome by the way, and ate dinner in the food court. We checked into our room. Everything worked out nice, and we had a rollaway bed for the 3rd boy. The sun was setting at 7:45 so we headed out to catch that. Our lodge was right on the rim and it was a short walk. The sunset was beautiful. We walked a short while down the Bright Angel Trail towards the bottom of canyon then came back up before it got dark. We have an early day tomorrow. We are headed to Page, Az for some rafting on the Colorado.
