Southwestern Excursion
We were driving to the 4 corners monument from Page, Az. We were on a 2 lane highway going through an isolated part of the Navajo reservation. There was a semi trailer lying on its side totally perpendicular across both lanes of the highway. The land was impassable on either side of the road. The police were not there yet and cars were backed up on both side of the wreck. It would be at least an hour before the road would be open. The nearest road was miles back in town & hours more to get where we needed to go. We noticed a minivan with the words "Helping the Navajo people" on it along with other writing we couldn't make out. This van turned off on to one of the dirt roads that ran through the reservation. We followed a stream of about 6 other cars to follow him. It was a 15 minute off roading adventure. The roads were all 1 lane & dirt, not really meant for minivans. There were several turns and forks in the road. We kept running into people coming from the other direction who were trying to get around the wreck from the other side. So at least we knew it went through. Since the roads were only 1 lane it made it difficult to navigate. We lost sight of our caravan a couple of times. When we made it to the other end there were only 3 cars left in the caravan. The other cars were nowhere in sight. Lin says it was his tracking skills that enabled him to stay with the caravan. : ) We made it out & a few miles up the road we finally saw a fire truck & police car speeding towards the accident we left behind us.
