Southwestern Excursion
On our way through Amarillo we took a slight detour to stop at the Cadillac Ranch. This was quite a strange sight, cars lined up in the middle of a field. There were crops growing on the field & a farmer was out there working. People just parked on the road & walked the worn pathway to the cars. Bizarre! Many people brought spray paint with them and they were busy painting the cars. When they left, many people left cans behind that still had paint in them. My boys took advantage of this wonderful graffiti opportunity and gleefully started painting the cars. From what I read this was not the original site of the Cadillac Ranch. It was moved to its current spot a few years ago. A local millionaire sponsored a group of college architects who wanted to do this. It is a strange case of "If you build it, they will come." There were other nationalities here at this spot as well. A family with a British accent were happily painting away. A funny story, there were a few college kids who started painting each other. They had their entire arms and legs covered with spray paint. When we left, the whole group was standing outside their car trying to figure out how to get in without messing up their car. We drove to Albuquerque, New Mexico. We spent the night another Holiday Inn Express Suites since we were having such good luck with them.
