(DAY 14)
Kia Ora!
We had a surprisingly long lie in and awoke at 8am! Although Picton seemed like a nice enough place, we didn't feel there was much to do so we wanted to move on straight away. Just as we were about to rustle up something small for breakfast, Kie was approached by an Aussie lad who was leaving for Australia and had food leftover! This meant our boring breakfast quickly became amazing and Kie whipped together steak, egg and cheese sandwiches which were bloody lovely. We barely let the food touch our sides before we got back into the campervan and got on our way.
On our visit to Westport Jeannie had recommended we see the Ohau Seal Colony so we stopped off at the Lookout and we were amazed at just how many seals there were - there were literally hundreds, including lots of pups. We clambered down the rocks as far as we could go and took advantage of the photo opportunity.
We instantly liked Kaikoura when we arrived. There was brilliant sunshine and the coastline was stunning. As it was a nice day and we'd been told to go whale watching in Kaikoura if we were going to do it at all, we headed straight to the I-Site (Tourist Information) to see what we could get booked and how much it would set us back. We had originally planned to go whale watching by boat but decided helicopter would be much more fun with better views of the whales. If you go in groups of three, the price of tickets is $220 for a thirty minute flight but in a couple it would cost far more. We decided to wait until there was a single person willing to go with us.
We found somewhere to stay but it was quite grotty, even at $30 and decided we wouldn't be staying there again! With no motivation to cook we bought a pizza, collecting it just in time before the fire alarm went off and all customers had to evacuate - without their food! We returned to the camper and scoffed our way through the pizza before falling asleep.
