(DAY 10)
Kia Ora!
As usual, we were awake early and Kie made a huge breakfast to set us up for the day. We went down to Lake Wanaka to take some photos of where we'd stayed for the night and were shocked at how clear the water was - we'd been told it was so fresh and clean that you could drink it! Kie dipped his feet in with thoughts playing on his mind of having a quick swim but the water was far too cold and with a long day ahead of us, he didn't fancy being damp in the car all day!
We started on the epic journey from Wanaka to Greymouth and made our first stop Fox Glacier. We were two of many tourists but we stood out from the crowd as neither of us were wearing full hiking gear nor coats! Fox Glacier was actually pretty impressive. It was a strange setting for a glacier, as the mountains surrounding it were rainforest, but made for some nice photos. We moved onto the more famous Franz Josef Glacier with the idea that it would be more impressive which, in actual fact, we didn't agree with. Although it was bigger, on the short walk, you couldn't get very close to it at all and the setting wasn't as impressive.
We didn't stay too long at Franz Josef before heading back to the campervan and making our way to our overnight stop - Greymouth, on the way stopping in a lovely, quiet spot for some noodles in the sun. We'd been recommended the backpackers hostel 'Neptunes' for parking up for the night - at $14 each we got full use of the hostel facilities and also got unlimited free internet. We really liked the hostel and its freebies but weren't so keen on our fellow travellers who were rather strange, to say the least. We spent the evening taking advantage of free internet and went to bed with a bowl of Milo cereal - yum!
