Soongies' Great Adventure
Our next destination in Sweden was Stockholm. Tim, Kate's brother, was going to be arriving into Stockholm Arlanda Airport today to join the travels. There were a few issues in getting to the airport in time to pick Tim up at 1:30 pm. The first one was running out of internet on our phones. We had forgotten to top up our phone credit and the plan had expired at midnight which meant we had no way of contacting Tim. The second was that our Airbnb in Bålsta had to be checked into by 2:30 pm and if we went to pick up Tim first, we probably wouldn't make it. The third was that our car started beeping at us as we were driving because it detected our tyres weren't at the correct pressures. Fortunately, we stopped at a Burger King on the side of the road to use their free WiFi to reload our phones. We also bought a medium fries (because we felt we should get something from them if we use their services!) but the packet looked so small Kate went to ask if we actually got a medium - we did. Then we made it to our Airbnb on time at 2 pm to check in - the apartment was nice and it had a secure garage. When we arrived, we had no idea where to go and accidentally drove down a pedestrian path into the middle of the complex - the host was quite perplexed with how we drove in! We made it to a petrol station and sorted out the tyres. They weren't really flat at all and it may have potentially been a standard warning at 11750 km. Eventually, at around 3 pm, we arrived at Terminal 5 at Arlanda Airport where Tim had been waiting for a while. The challenge was now how to tell Tim where we were waiting - if he stepped out of the airport, he lost WiFi and wouldn't be able to contact us. After circling around again, we found a car park to stop in and Kate went into the terminal to find Tim. Success - we finally met up! We drove back to Bålsta to the apartment where we settled in, had a late lunch and then decided to catch the train into Stockholm. The train station was only a few minutes walk away and it was about 5 pm by the time we got there. The ticketing was a bit complex - there were 2 different services which we didn't know about at the time - and we ended up getting tickets on the regional express service as opposed to the commuter trains. The train was delayed a little but very comfortable and took us about 35 minutes to get to Stockholm Central. The air was crisp outside but the sunset gave the city a nice glow and a pretty cool atmosphere. There were tall, colourful blocks of buildings everywhere and rivers around the islands with bridges passing over them. We strolled around Gamla Stan (the old town) with its narrow streets and many cafes, restaurants and shops. After a bit of wandering around, we sought out a place for dinner. Stockholm is not the cheapest place to eat out but we headed towards a food court in the Norrmalm area of the city. On the way we walked down the beautiful and vibrant Riksgatan street which led us to the modern area of the city. The Kungshallen food court had a great selection of cuisines and were relatively cheap. The servings were huge - Calvin had vegetable pad thai, Kate had rice with Chinese stir fried chicken and vegetables, and Tim had an enormous calzone. We headed back home on the train, ducking into the Coop supermarket on the way to get some groceries. The train - the commuter one this time - was delayed, something about animals on the tracks...
