Soongies' Great Adventure
So today was a little bit frustrating. But it was a nice frustrating because we were in Cape Town on holiday. The plan for today was to do a Free Walking Tour around Cape Town City Centre in the morning and then hike up Lion's Head in the afternoon with a picnic dinner for sunset. It started off fairly well - our lovely AirBnB hosts allowed us to use their washing machine for our smelly clothes which was very much appreciated. We got to the City Centre for the start of the tour - this time walking along High Level Road for a change. The tour was again very interesting and insightful. Prince William, our brilliant tour guide, led us to some of the old buildings and areas in the city and gave us some incredible history of the apartheid, the slave era, and the Dutch East India Company (VOC). He led us to the Houses of Parliament (currently in session debating free education in South Africa), the Magistrate's Court where Nelson Mandela gave his first speech as a free man after 27 years in prison, St George's Cathedral (where Desmond Tutu still attends), the High Court Annex (where there is a "whites only" and a "non-whites only" bench outside serving as a reminder of the errors of apartheid) the beautiful Company's Garden. You get a real sense of the unity of all South Africans now and they speak of their history with pride but also with a sense of understanding that what happened in the past was truly terrible and that now they can learn from their mistakes and move forward together. They have a deep love and respect for Nelson Mandela and the other great visionaries that helped to mend this country and piece back together what was lost. Even the slaves that built this city are remembered with pillars dedicated to the memory of them and their contribution to Cape Town and its culture. About 10 minutes into the tour however, Kate's sole of her boot came loose! She did well to concentrate on the tour and also scout out cobblers along the way. She only looked slightly odd, high stepping with her left flapping shoe to ensure it didn't drag and completely tear off. We ended up finishing the tour, finding a shoe repairer who then said the only thing to do would be to duct tape it as glue wouldn't hold it. So Calvin went off in search of duct tape from the local hardware store - a big roll of silver duct tape (he thought silver best for the high visibility of it). So, with Kate's shoe duct-taped together, we Ubered over to the waterfront in search of new hiking shoes. There wasn't a large selection and knowing Kate's specific shoe needs, we probably weren't going to find an ideal shoe in Cape Town. We did however find another cobbler who said he could fix it with glue and stitching. Great! We left the shoes with him and Kate "Bogan Barefoot" Soong hotfooted it out of the posh shopping mall to the parking lot to get an Uber home. But now Calvin's Uber app wasn't working! He had changed his number on the app to his Australian Post TravelSIM number and now he had to verify his mobile again - but Uber wasn't sending SMS to international roaming numbers. So no Uber and taxi was the next option. Then once home, we tried calling TravelSIM to work out what was wrong, except trying to select options on the answering message menu wasn't working and we couldn't get through. Fortunately we had WiFi and internet chatted our way through to escalating the problem with TravelSIM management. Basically after 2 hours of trying to fix phones and Uber, we got so frustrated we decided to eat so we put on some different footwear and walked down to the Waterfront for some South African cuisine and dessert at Karibu with a view of Table Mountain to eat to. First world problems drift away when we get to eat, especially when it involves ice cream. And Kate's sole was saved! So wasn't all bad. And we get a chance to climb Lion's Head tomorrow. Also ate some Bobotie and bought some biltong.
