Soongies' Great Adventure
Proper first full day of being in one city for the first time on our holiday! Winning already. A good night's sleep in a comfortable bed at the AirBnB meant we were ready to get out and explore more of this beautiful place called Cape Town. After breakfast in bed (banana bread inspired muesli - but cereal nonetheless), we decided to get on the City Sightseeing Hop-On Hop-Off bus. You know the ones - those big red garish looking double-decker ones. On the way to the bus stop, Kate had the ingenious idea to buy a pack of carrots for healthy snacking along the way. Can't get fat and slobby while holidaying - can we? The Blue Peninsula bus took us to the hinterland areas of Cape Town where we passed some interesting places including the very wealthy estates in the wine regions and the luxury properties around Hout Bay which were juxtaposed to the overcrowded and rickety settlement Imizamo Yethu or the barren lands of District Six. It's quite a stark contrast - one side of the road are massive townhouses and new apartments while on the other side are tiny makeshift shacks with old tin roofs. It's a bit of a shock to realise the huge gap between poor and wealthy, blacks and whites. Stopping off in Camps Bay for lunch of grilled fish and chips. The picturesque (but windy - probably followed us from Geraldton) beach against the backdrop of the stony mountains was a good location to spend a little bit of time exploring some of the coastline. Calvin was going to swim in the ocean but he got cold feet - instantly. While Calvin was acquiring cold feet, Kate was protectively brooding over our daypacks. Back in the city, we watched an African djembe workshop in the street, drumming up some business for one of the shops - unfortunately we didn't get a go. We then joined an afternoon Free Walking Tour to Bo-Kaap. Ken, our guide, led us through this area of brightly painted houses, friendly neighbourhoods and cobblestone streets and told us of the history and development of how this unique suburb came to be. A very excellent walk to do. 2 other things to note: 1. Kate had no trouble with her socks today. 2. The pack of carrots did not get opened today.
