Soongies' Great Adventure
Today was Table Mountain day. The main attraction of Cape Town is this. You can hike up the mountain - takes about 2 and half hours for free. Or you can take the Aerial Cable Car - takes about 2 and a half minutes for $25 each. Kate said it was a well-spent $50 for two of us. Whoever goes to Cape Town must do the Table Mountain. Whether you walk or hike, it's an amazing and beautiful natural wonder. So natural and so wonderful that it is on the New 7 Natural Wonders of the World (according to the official poll in 2011). If you do go, go early morning or in the afternoon when it is less busy. We did wait 45 minutes to get up to the top but the line felt like it moved relatively quickly.
It can be quite cool up top but the views and the easy walks on the plateau are the best. Clouds coming in from time to time would mist our views and then lift in one breath to reveal the city sprawled beneath us. There are birds and dassies (rock hyrax), flowers and boulders all around. We spent a good 2 hours wandering around the tracks, handstanding, photographing, and posing. We also did spend a good amount of time just taking in the views, the natural landscape and fresh air. Photos don't really capture the vastness and depths of this place.
Kate's carrots came out today and Calvin felt healthier munching on some carrot sticks while walking around the mountain. Kate felt a bit like a rock wallaby and surprised both herself and Calvin by actually clambering up some rocks without crying!
Back down from Table Mountain, we took the bus back to the Waterfront, had a snack, walked home to get changed into something warner for a Sunset Tour up to Signal Hill. The cold wind had blown in by the late afternoon so both wearing jeans, matching soft shell jackets and matching daypacks established us as the ultimate travelling couple. The bus took the route around to Camps bay then up to Signal Hill where locals and visitors gathered on the slope to watch the sun setting over the South Atlantic Ocean. Perfect place to eat our take away Pad Thai and Chow Mein (traditional African fare) purchased from the Waterfront. After sunset, on the way down, we could see the glowing lights of the city spreading out in all directions - nice place to view it all!
We got off the bus a bit earlier than we were meant to as it was close-ish to where we were going. Rather than take an Uber, Kate agreed to start training for the Tokyo 2020 20km race walk. Calvin doesn't think he's ever seen Kate walk as fast as she did that evening, nor her artful dodging of shady characters on the street (almost as if she has done parkour before).
Sadly, we only have 2 and bit days left in South Africa before we go to Namibia. But also quite good for Calvin as Kate loves the South African accent a little bit too much - it's hard work trying to distract her from staring dreamily at them.

Amy Schelfhout What a fabulous post! I laughed a few times throughout the read. Chow mean = traditional african food. Ha ha!
Ruth I am picturing Kate dodging the shifty characters and smiling...
Margaret King Great Blog. Reminded me of when I went to table mountain. We caught cable car up and walked down. It was lovely. If you have time go to the Hoewhoek Inn they had a fantastic little menu.
Lisa I feel like I am listening to the two of you telling me about your day. Love it!
Sarah P Gosh Kate - very brave!!
soongies Thanks Lisa! Glad you're enjoying it!
