Soongies' Great Adventure
We packed up and headed off for Poland in the early hours of the morning - early meaning 8:30 am. It was an unsuccessful packing up because we forgot the food in the fridge! Fortunately, we had only gone about 10 km before Calvin remembered and turned back. Kate went to get the food but thought the key was already gone from under the mat! But it was all good - it was still there, Kate had just looked under the wrong mat. Finally, on our way to Poland, briefly stopping to get another vignette for our car (total tally of vignettes on the car equating to 4 - should be 5 but Slovakia has electronic ones) for Czech Republic as our route was taking us towards Brno on the way to Krakow. While driving through Czech Republic, Calvin remembered there was some left over Koruna from when we were in Prague. Fortunately there was a rest stop with a KFC on the way which we pulled into and used CZK 198 out of our CZK 200. A delicious mid morning meal. We made it to Poland, 3rd country for the day, and into Krakow where we checked into our Airbnb in Old Town. Timing was good - probably due to the fact that Polish motorways have a speed limit of 140 km/h. Our host was amazingly friendly and she had even put 2 homemade freshly baked Black Forest cupcakes out for us! We are them as soon as she left - they were so good! After doing a load of washing, we wandered into the streets of Old Town. Krakow is a really happening and trendy place - lots of cafes, restaurants, vegetarian and vegan places, old warehouses and factories turned into bars. It's also the city where we've seen the most tourists in a while. It was a short walk from our studio apartment into the heart of old town - the Main Market Square where we could see the Cloth Market, St Mary's Basilica, the Old Town Hall Tower, many horse and carriages, flower markets and locals and tourists walking about. It was a great atmosphere, particularly as it was evening time on a Monday! The most happening place we've been to on Monday - restaurants (offering alfresco dining in the cold!), bars and cafes, shops, markets - all were open for business. We walked around taking it all in - we did a double take on St Mary's Basilica after we visited a tourist information centre and the lady told us that it has towers of differing heights. We then headed over to Wawel Castle where we walked up to the top and saw the Vistula River from the walls. It's a pretty castle - the inside of the main castle square is spacious and there is a cathedral there with dragon bones hanging from the roof - we didn't get to see it as the gates to the church were closed. One part of the castle, there was an empty courtyard surrounded by galleries - Calvin wanted to do a quick wedding dance but Kate was a little shy thinking people might come along but managed 3 quick steps! A few minutes from the castle, we walked to the Jewish Quarter where we saw the oldest synagogue in Poland - well the outside of it as it was closed - the Remuh Synagogue. The Jewish Quarter was also a very hip area, quite the bohemian vibe. We strolled back fairly quickly through the city because we were quite hungry - the warm lights in the Old Town and up on Wawel Hill made it look amazing. Calvin decided that Krakow is one of his most favourite cities. Past The Barbican, dinner was found near the Grunwald Monument at Jarema Restaurant which was a beautiful Polish restaurant serving traditional Polish food. We shared barszcz (beetroot soup) with meat dumplings, sauerkraut dumplings and broccoli with garlic and had a Polish cheesecake to finish it off. While sharing the cheesecake, Calvin was talking and didn't realise he forked the last piece (and a big piece it was too!) of cheesecake and had put it in his mouth to Kate's horror - she was expecting some too!

kentishclan Please tell me you guys have plans to go to Wieliczka salt mine while you are nearby? Not too long a drive and totally worth it. I'm glad you like Krakow... I'm so jealous that you got accomodation in Old Town. The public train and bus system there is positively communist era while not 'dodgy' in any way... its dingy AS! Definitely something to avoid if you can (which you have... hence my jealousy) Eat a dumpling or 2 for me
soongies Beat you to it Cory! Went this morning already before heading to Wroclaw.
