Soongies' Great Adventure
Our last long distance drive in our little black Peugeot 208 was taking us from Hamburg to Utrecht in The Netherlands. The drive was a fairly easy one on the autobahn - hardly any roadworks and reaching speeds of around 155 km/h at times! We stopped for lunch at a rest area where we had difficulty making up our minds about what to eat - there were bistro type options, toasted paninis, and Burger King. No one got Burger King. Crossing the border into Holland, we arrived into Utrecht and parked in a free parking street just outside the centre of the city area and had a wander. Utrecht is a pretty place - even more so with Spring coming into full bloom. Canals bordered by green trees and flowering plants, tulips around (Kate got very excited about seeing this!), a traditional windmill with a little farm, old looking bridges over the canals and lots of bicycles everywhere! It took a little bit of practice dodging the cyclists - they were everywhere! The city centre itself was lively - lots of people around and lots of fried food! We walked past a coffeeshop that stunk of weed. We also saw the Domtoren - the tall church tower. After wandering a little bit, we got an ice cream (elderflower and apple for Tim and Calvin, white chocolate for Kate) and then looked in a book store. We were due to meet Calvin's friend, Eva, at her brother's place where she lives so we headed back to the car and drove around (almost getting hit by 2 angry cyclists!) to unload everything from our little car. It was exciting to see Eva again and meet her brother, Joep. Joep's friend, Lars, was also there. Joep (one half of the DJ due Sick individuals) and Lars were heading to Belgium to play at a festival that night. Tim headed out to meet a friend of his in Utrecht. And Eva, Calvin and Kate stayed at home - Eva cooked up some salmon and vegetables for dinner - and talked into the night.
