Soongies' Great Adventure
This morning we drove Tim to the airport as he was flying from Amsterdam to Manchester, ready to start his 6 month cricket season there. After we said our farewells it was then time to say farewell to our Peugeot that has been with us for 2.5 months. The car drop off place was about 15 mins from the airport although we made a wrong turn which added on another 10 minutes at least. When we got the car the petrol gauge was pretty much on empty so we wanted to return it in the same state! So driving to the car drop off place was a little bit stressful as the car kept beeping at us telling us it needed more petrol! Final kilometers on the clock - 15963 km! Started with 3 km. Not bad for 2.5 months! Once we arrived at the car drop off place, the staff gave the car the once over and we passed! I think they wouldn't have noticed if we hadn't changed the tyres back from winter to summer tyres though! We could have saved ourselves a lot of time and money if we hadn't had to send the summer tyres from France to Holland and then get them swapped over in Holland! After our sad farewell to the Peugeot we got a shuttle bus to the airport so we could catch the train in to central Amsterdam. At Amsterdam central station we both bought a croquette from the wall - a compulsory Dutch thing to do! And then we headed for lunch to Kan Yin, a Surinamese restaurant. Calvin had noodles with chicken and Kate had rice and veggies. We then wandered through the red light district! There were lots of narrow streets where ladies would sit or stand in the windows in their underwear advertising themselves to their next customer. There was a range of ages and body shapes! We saw a couple of old men come out of a brothel and then one younger guy go into the room with a window. It was another world entirely! In the area there were lots of other interesting places such as 'coffee shops' selling cannabis, a cannabis icecream shop and a condomerie! Being constantly surrounded by the smell of cannabis was getting a bit much so we then wandered through the canal streets which were very beautiful. We then wander into the Begijnhof - an enclosed courtyard dating from the 14th century. It was built as a sanctuary for the Begijntjes, a Catholic sisterhood who lived like nuns but took no monastic vows. The houses in Begijnhof are still occupied by single women. We then walked to the Anne Frank house but decided against waiting in a 3.5 hour queue and just took a photo of the outside! It was then time for more food - the obvious choice was to go to Winkel 43 and try the best apple pie in Amsterdam! It was more like an apple cake but it was delicious! We then walked back to the train station, taking in the beautiful sight of St Nicholas church from a distance on the way. We caught the train back to Utrecht and then walked through Lombok. We firstly stopped at a supermarket so Calvin could buy some Dutch apple cake. Then we wandered further down the street where there were loads of independent grocers selling their produce. It was a really nice atmosphere. We ended up buying a pumpkin, cherry tomatoes, 2 eggplants, 2 capsicums, spring onions, ginger, 2 mangoes, mushrooms and pasta for a total of €8! So cheap! When we got home we used the produce to make dinner and then for dessert we had stracciatella mousse which Calvin made (from a packet mix we got in Hamburg) and mango. We then played some card games with Eva and Joep (Eva's brother).
