Soongies' Great Adventure
All packed up and ready to move on to Namibia. The Airbnb we stayed at was brilliant and perfect for us and we were out by 8:45 am. Flight to Namibia was fine. Very turbulent for the landing but Calvin didn't even notice - he was asleep! While Kate was white knuckled and nauseous. We landed in Hosea Kutako airport in Windhoek. It is hot in Namibia. 34 degrees, humid and no breeze. We picked up a rental car from Hertz (Toyota Corolla) and drove away into the desert with Kate at the wheel (much better at driving manual than Calvin). We were excited - in Namibia and driving in Namibia! First impression - hot. Second impression - landscape is a bit like the arid desert of Australia. Scrubby, brown and dry. But no kangaroos jumping out. Also no gazelles or warthogs either. We met up with our Couchsurfing host, Pedro, a producer - he has a feature film premiere coming up this Friday - The Hidden Sky, and followed him to his apartment which he had just moved into yesterday. While Pedro was out and about organising his premiere, we went shopping at the local Spar to get some groceries for Etosha. Shopping was fine but taking out money at the ATM wasn't. We got followed by a dodgy man trying to "help" (aka pickpocket) us. Fortunately there was a security guard who chased him away and we didn't lose anything. Pedro took us on a tour around Windhoek and drove to and through the slums of the city. It was really interesting and pretty crazy - small tin shacks, crowded amongst each other, people and vans and taxis everywhere. It was good to get a local perspective - Pedro said that all these people in the slums, they go to work, or they find work - they're eager to make a better life, to get out of poverty. Across the road from the slums, new mansions are being built and large fences too. Pedro took us to dinner at Joe's Beer House, a popular spot with lots of people. The place was done up like a mix of Bali huts with Australian outback pub. Nice place with good food and good bottled water.
