Soongies' Great Adventure
After having had multiple 5 am wake up times during the safari, Calvin and Kate had a slight sleep in this morning (Calvin woke up at 6 am).
It was pretty hot outside already – warm and humid – but the air conditioned room was bliss! We ventured out to the patio for an alfresco buffet breakfast which we weren't sure was included or not! We ate it anyway.
First priority after breakfast (of course), was washing! The hotel did have a laundry service but it was quite expensive. So Calvin found a place in Mombasa that picks up, washes and folds , and then drops off the clothing for a lot cheaper than the hotel charges.
The guy could apparently tell we were quite desperate for our clothes to be washed. He doesn't usually work Sundays but he skipped church and everything to wash our clothes! Kate was still a bit worried we would never see our clothes again after handing them over. He said he would return them at 6pm.
After saying goodbye to our clothes and face timing some friends we decided to head to Fort Jesus - a short walk in the really humid weather from the hotel. After avoiding a really annoying guy trying to get us to pay for him as our guide we wandered around the fort. The fort was originally built by the Portuguese and the structure is in the form of a man. It was nice walking around the old buildings, walls and cannons.
We then caught a tuk tuk to a Chinese restaurant overlooking the water. Initial impression - this looks pricey. For African standards it certainly was - 2 meals and 2 drinks for $17 - how our perspective of expensive has changed!!! But we missed Asian food so it was worth it!
We then caught a tuk tuk back into old town and a guide convinced us to take us on a 1.5 hour walking tour of old town for $12. It was actually really interesting going around with him. We strolled through the old narrow streets, spice, fruit and fish markets and gardens. We saw the slave tunnel where slaves were brought through to and from the ships coming into port. We even saw a street cat, with 2 tiny kittens, eating the placenta of one of them (obviously just having given birth). We bought some delicious jackfruit on the tour too! After the tour we found a supermarket (and on the way we also bought a mango for 40c) to get water and yoghurt and then wandered back to the hotel for a relaxing afternoon. And the guy returned with the washing at 6:00 - our clothes have never looked so clean!
Had dinner (pizza) at the halal restaurant next to the hotel as Kate doesn't really like exploring the streets of Africa at night! And then caught up on our blog!

Trudy Loving the blog. I bet you are glad you have such a lovely middle name, Kate.
kentishclan Upside down Miss Jane (If you were old like me... you would understand this reference. Ah they don't make kids shows like Mr Squiggles these days)
kentishclan OK... this African Circle of Life bizzo is getting a bit crazy. So far we've had pictorial evidence of prcreation & impregnation, birth with a bonus placental lunch, plus excretion of the human and hippo kind. Just waiting for some gruesome pics of a dead or dying thing up close and you'll have closed the loop completely.

kentishclan OK... I don't know why that came out twice. Must have been so funny that Travelpod wanted to repeat itself (feel free to delete away friends)
