Soongies' Great Adventure
After saying goodbye to the beautiful Icelandic horses over the road from our accommodation, it was time to drive to Skogafoss waterfall. We climbed up what seemed like thousands of steps to get to the top for the best view. Once down the bottom again, Calvin wanted to get as close to the waterfall as possible so we survived the very slippery rocks to get as close as we could!
After the delight of the waterfall we ventured further east and stumbled across the stop to view the famous aeroplane on Solheimasandur beach. From the car park it didn't look too much of a walk to get to the plane (we couldn't see the plane but we could see lots of people). It was about 10:50 when we started walking. By 11:15 we realised that our destination was still quite far away and we needed to leave by 11:45 at the latest to get to the snowmobiling meeting point. So after about half an hour of walking on black sand we turned back without seeing the aeroplane.
It was then time for snowmobiling!!! We had a quick lunch of leftover pasta sauce with veggies (minus the pasta) in the car. Then we had to put thick orange coveralls on as well as a balaclava and big helmet so it was pretty boiling while we waited for the big group to get ready. Once everyone was dressed up, we all took the big off-road bus to the base of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Calvin was first to drive while Kate held on tight behind as passenger. It was so much fun driving through the snow and the scenery was awesome. After about 30 mins we got to the top of the glacier at 1250 m above sea level with an incredible view. One of the guides was a geologist and he told us about the glacier which can be 800 m thick on top of the Katla Crater. Katla last erupted in 1918 and it usually erupts every 50 or so years so it's well overdue to blow! Then it was time for Kate to drive while Calvin sat on the back! Calvin thought Kate was 'a gun' driving the snowmobile! Kate felt the need for speed and got to do lots of downhill runs which was particularly fun! Safe to say, Kate enjoyed snowmobiles more than skiing!
After another 30 mins we made it back to the bottom and then got the big bus back to the station. Such a fun experience!!
We then drove to the Dryhólaey headland and saw some great rock formations out at sea and black sand beaches.
After this we drove to the town of Vik where we bought lots of supplies from the supermarket to last us the Easter break and then we got some petrol.
The drive from there was pretty spectacular with lava moss on the side of the road.
We then stopped at Fjathràrgljúfur canyon which was pretty spectacular!
But the best was yet to come! As we were getting quite close to our accommodation (about 8pm but still very light), Calvin thought he would pull over to take some photos of a mountain. Kate decided she'd stay in the car as it was pretty cold outside! Calvin disappeared over the little hill to take photos and then called Kate to come and have a look. Luckily he did! This was Glacier Lagoon (the official stop was a bit further up the road so that's why it was such a surprise!). It was a lagoon filled with mini icebergs with mountains all around! It was AMAZING and the lighting at that time of day made it look even more beautiful!
We didn't stay for too long though as we needed to get to our accommodation. We had to drive 3kms past the house to pick up the keys but we drove in to have a look before going to get the keys and we saw reindeer!
After collecting the keys it was finally time to make dinner - veggie pasta - our staple in these expensive countries!
