Soongies' Great Adventure
Happy Easter!! The Easter Bunny made it all the way to Iceland. After being out of the room for a short time, Kate returned to a treasure hunt situation! Easter eggs had been hidden all around the room! She managed to find all 12 Milka Oreo eggs with only a few clues!! After the treasure hunt, Kate and the Easter bunny drove about an hour, back tracking, to Skaftafell where Calvin did a glacier walk.
Unfortunately, Kate's issues with her feet meant that the glacier walk wasn't really an option for her, so she had a few hours in Skaftafell to herself. Kate used the time to call family and then went on a short walk to the edge of the glacier before having some lunch. Meanwhile, Calvin had crampons on his boots, an ice axe in his hand and a climbing harness around his waist while treading on the blue ice of the Svinafellsjokull glacier tongue. It was a really fun experience and the sunny weather and still day made it even better. The guide made sure we stayed well away from the edges of the many deep crevasses so we wouldn't die on his watch. This is the glacier where Interstellar was filmed so basically Calvin walked where Matthew McConaughey walked. We used the axe to pick at the ice and mined some delicious ice cubes to suck on while we walked. The black stripes in the ice are from the ash falling from volcanic eruptions so it gives the cracked ice a really interesting pattern.
After the glacier walk we got back in the car ready to take in some more sights. On the drive we saw quite a few reindeer which was exciting!! We then arrived at Jokulsarlon, aka Glacier lagoon (which we had quickly seen the evening before). This time we got to spend some more time there. It's an absolutely incredible sight with loads of icebergs in this lagoon!! We even spotted a couple of seals amongst the icebergs too. Every so often we heard this really loud noise, which was an iceberg breaking, and then we would see it float away. At one point, an iceberg broke into the shape of a duck!! Kate said this place was the best thing she had ever seen!!
Over the road was another beautiful sight known as Diamond Beach. There are icebergs all over the black sand and some in the water - such an amazing sight!
After taking in these sights it was time to start getting to our destination for the night (Egilsstadir) - at least a 4 hour drive from here and it was already 4:00. Thankfully it doesn't start getting dark until about 9pm! The drive was through some fjords and then through the mountains. There was soooo much snow around on the mountains! And it was quite windy so the snow was being blown around everywhere. It wasn't the most relaxing drive!
The roads had thankfully been ploughed but at one point, higher up on the mountain, some thick snow was on the road (it must have fallen from the mountain) and our little 2WD didn't cope so well. We got bogged!!!
It was 8:00pm, there was snow everywhere, we were high up in the mountains, there was nothing in sight and we had no phone reception! We tried reversing with Calvin pushing the car - the car moved an inch! Then the engine started smelling from over-revving!! Kate was about to call the emergency number when we spotted a car driving from the other side towards us!
These two huge Icelandic people got out and so Calvin and this couple pushed (they were so strong it was more like they lifted) our car, while Kate reversed. So we were not bogged anymore but how were we going to get over the snow to continue the drive to our accommodation (about an hour drive from here). The Icelandic couple, in their small Corolla, decided the best way they were going to get across, was to drive really fast over the snowy bit. We watched them succeed! Now our turn (while they waited to check we were ok). Calvin did the same thing and drove really fast and...it also worked! Phew! A little wave to our friends to let them know we were fine and we were off! There were no more scary snowy bits. We were getting pretty low on petrol so it was a relief to find a petrol station! We followed the GPS to our accommodation. Problem was when the GPS said 'you have arrived at your destination', we could only see snow and mountains around! Not a single building!
After a bit of Google mapping we realised we still had to drive another 10 minutes along this snowy trail to reach the house! What a day!!!
The host was nice and his hoard of dogs and cats were friendly. He had a huge reindeer head mounted on his living room wall and some other stuffed animals from the taxidermist but this all added to our Iceland experience! We eventually got to make dinner and by 10:00 we got to eat our rice porridge!
