Soongies' Great Adventure
Lyon!! The food capital of France and possibly even Europe. The place where gastronomy was invented. The place where two rivers - The Saône and The Rhône - meet. It was also the place where we stayed in a fairly strange AirBnb. The listing said that breakfast was included however when Calvin hinted about breakfast, the hostess just showed him where the bowls and cutlery was. This was fine as Calvin and Kate had cereal and milk in the car but it was a little awkward. Relieved at not having to drive the car around the city today and also not having to worry about parking in the street (it's free on Sunday!), Calvin and Kate went for a walk around the city. This is the place where food is renowned - so what else should Calvin and Kate do but head for the gigantic markets of Lyon on a Sunday morning. A leisurely stroll past Fort Vaise down to The Saône and along the river to the arts and crafts markets. There were many interesting things that were on display - amazing paintings, drawings, odd marionettes, clay work and jewellery among other things. Calvin and Kate walked through the length of the market successfully without buying anything. However when they crossed the bridge to the other side, that was a whole different story! The food and produce markets were on the other side - stalls and stalls along the river selling fresh fruits and vegetables, cheeses of all kinds, breads and pastries, fish, frogs and sausages as well as lots of rotisserie chicken and potatoes. We could see why Lyon was the place for food! Kate and Calvin had a cheese and chicken sausage each, a beef samosa, a fish nugget and a chicken nugget, and an egg custard tart! The market was busy as it is every Sunday morning and it was great to see such fresh food - and not expensive to buy either! We then wandered around Lyon to the main square - Place Bellecour and the nearby garishly large bouquet of ginormous flowers sculpture and along the River Rhône. The sun was out and it was a beautiful walk along and down towards the confluence of the Saône and Rhône rivers (stopping for a croissant and hot chocolate along the way!). The city was pretty quiet as most places are closed on Sundays with the exception of Old Lyon (Vieux Lyon). We stopped at a shopping centre around the confluence - Pôle de Commerces et de Loisirs de Confluence where we took advantage of the free wifi to call Kate's parents and also ate some amazingly fresh and refreshing sushi. It was a nice change form the heavy French food. At the confluence, we saw the meeting of the two rivers and the outside of the interestingly designed Musée des Confluences. We decided to head to La Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière which we could see atop the hills overlooking the city. Taking public transport was easy - a 24 hour ticket cost €5.80 and could be used on trams, metro and buses. We took a tram, metro and the funicular to the top of Fourvière to see the beautiful panoramic views of Lyon and the very huge and intricately detailed basilica before heading over to the old Théâtre gallo-romain amphitheaters. It was fun walking around the old walls and tiers of the amphitheaters - they still have some productions and performances from time to time there. It was a short walk down the hill (and past a fair few cars with their windows smashed in) to the main street of Vieux Lyon where there were rows of restaurants advertised as Bouchon Lyonnaise - a restaurant serving traditonal Lyonnaise food. We found one called Les Chandelles which had a 30% off happy hour deal! Three courses for €10 each! Kate had sausage with pickles and salad, beef bourguignon, apple pie (and 4 pieces of delicious bread). Calvin's meal consisted of onion tart, fish of the day, lemon tart (and 1 piece of delicious bread). On the walk to the metro, we saw the outside of Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste lit up, and from the square, you could see the Fourvière basilica lit up on the hill. Back home to catch up on the blogs.
