Soongies' Great Adventure
Time to say goodbye to Les Deux Alpes this morning! Our key was being collected / chalet was being inspected at 9:00 so we packed up and cleaned this morning. We passed the chalet inspection with flying colours so at 9:05 we were all packed / squished into the car ready for the 2.5 hour journey into Lyon. Jeroen did very well managing the tight hair pin turns of the alps! Once we got to Lyon airport it was time to say goodbye to Jeroen and Rianne as we had to pick up our leased car and they had to drive all the way back to the Netherlands. It was a smooth process picking up our black Peugeot 208 (with red number plates) car from the airport. It was then time to embrace the European roads and drive the car for the first time! Challenge number 1 - getting into the drivers seat! Kate was first up to drive but nearly got in the passenger seat on the right hand side. Good start! Challenge number 2 - using the right hand to change gears! These were some of the challenges faces before even moving the car! It was pretty stressful driving the car for the first time - constantly going to use the left hand to change gears, needing to remind ourselves to stay in the right lane and realising the roads are a lot narrower than we are used to. First stop was the petrol station as the gauge was showing close to no petrol when we picked up the car. We had to go to the counter, say a maximum amount we wanted (we chose 70 euros), swipe the credit card (but no money is taken), fill up (it cost 45 euros) then come back to the counter and pay for the actual amount. Seems a pretty long process but that's how it's done in France! We then needed to go to a garage to get winter tyres put on the car in preparation for our 3 month road trip through Europe. Calvin had done his research so we got ourselves to a garage called 'Speedy', according to their website open all day on Saturdays. There was 1 car parked there and Calvin went up to the person in the car who then called the owner to come to the shop. The owner came 5-10 mins later. We went upstairs to greet him. We expected to see car tyres etc everywhere. Instead there were suits and ties everywhere! Huh?? In his limited English he explained that Speedy had closed down! But then after Kate explained our situation in her basic French he then explained in his French where another garage was. We drove (this time with Calvin at the wheel) in the general direction of what we understood he was saying but unfortunately didn't come across anything so we then made for another 'Speedy' which Google said was open all day Saturday. After a few wrong turns we made it but the owner said they were closed! We then decided we would wait until Monday to get the winter tyres sorted! We then drove to our AirBnB and arrived at 2:00. Emeline - or host, was quite strange and a little flustered. She seemed quite anxious and awkward (more awkward than Kate!). Our official check in time was meant to be 7 pm (quite late!) but Emeline agreed that we could leave our bags in the flat which was nice - but we had to leave because she didn't want us in the flat yet. We decided we needed to get some supermarket supplies for the car so we drove to a big shopping centre called Part-Dieu. We experienced having to queue to pay 70 cents each to use a shopping centre toilet! We had Asian noodles and rice for lunch and then wandered around and got our supplies from the Carrefour supermarket. We then walked to the food market - Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse - nearby to have a look around but most of the shops were closing. Back to Part-Dieu it was to get take away sushi for dinner. We drove home (in the dark and wet roads) and had an awkward dinner with our AirBnB host!
