Soongies' Great Adventure
We woke up to a cold and quiet Prague. Sundays start slow for the city - most places don't open until 9:30 or 10 but we were up, ready and out by 9 am - even after having to put on 10 layers! Weather today ranged between -2 and 1 degrees. First item on the agenda for the day was to fill the apparent hole in Kate's stomach as soon as possible - this was achieved at McDonald's with an entree of a Sausage and Egg McMuffin. This was followed by a banana to balance the diet - pretty much cancels the badness of eating McDonald's, right? The rest of the day was filled with wandering around the city. Our Airbnb is pretty central so it was a short walk to most places. Impressions of Prague - beautiful, grand, a mix of old and some new, impressive but still seems to be what Prague should be. We also noted the food is cheap! Especially compared to Australian prices (and Dubaian prices!). Calvin is extremely excited by this discovery. Wandering around the cobblestone streets and pathways, rugged up in jackets boots and beanies, we found many Christmas markets where different stalls of delicious smelling food, hot wine and hot chocolate were being sold, small trinkets and crafts were on display, and lots of Christmas decorations and trees to create an atmosphere of, well, Christmas, particularly with a beautiful nativity scene. We continued on into Old Town square, where you could see people lining up to go up the Prague Astronomical Clock, and an even bigger Christmas market. We had a hot chocolate and bought some lychees for a snack for later. Strolling along, we walked across Charles Bridge - a beautiful gothic structure with statues and views of Vltava River, leading to Prague Castle. There was a small brass band on the bridge which made it even better! We got the castle in time to witness the changing of the guard. And then it started to rain. Kate's jacket doesn't have a hood which she didn't realise when she bought it! So, now we decided to explore the shops of Prague - from the souvenir stores to the large shopping malls - in search of a waterproof beanie. We found some Russian faux fur hats which could potentially work but probably weren't quite waterproof enough and Kate was too embarrassed to wear it. We had lunch in an Asian restaurant next to our Airbnb - so good and so cheap. Kate had pho and Calvin had lemongrass chicken. Perfect for a cold day. There are so many Asian restaurants in Prague! Usually Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese and Chinese all in the same menu. We had Trdelník for afternoon tea - a cylinder of roasted rolled dough and sugar, plain or filled with apple strudel or icecream. We also noticed a lot of museums. We walked past the Sex Machines Museum (Calvin and Kate sat on the Love Test chair outside and both got the result of "Wild" lovers), the Lego Museum (Calvin would love this one), Garnet Museum, Museum of Medieval Torture Instruments, and the Museum of Communism. We decided to go to the Museum of Communism - it was really interesting reading about the history of communism in the area and more specifically in the Czech Republic. Ironically, the museum is right next to a casino! Kate got a bit bored - too much reading and not interactive enough. She would prefer the Sex Machines Museum but it was a bit pricey. We then strolled around the streets and markets more, towards the river and Charles Bridge. It was dark by this time (4:30 pm) but it felt a lot later than it was. It also started to rain more. We had sushi for dinner next to the river before seeing the night lights of the bridge and the castle. A hot apple juice from the markets topped it off.

kentishclan Totally the look of a Wild Lover... for sure Kate. Calvin should get a rating of 'mean lover' for posting such unflattering photos of his beloved wifey
kentishclan OMG - flashback envy. These are massive in Budapest (called Chimney cakes there). Aren't they awesome! #epicdrool
kentishclan Not that I didn't enjoy your African blogs... but this one has me very excited as you know I have fond memories of Europe and can't wait to see where you go and what you think of places we'll both have reached. I had a Christkindlemarket flashback and we decorated the front of SPAD as a giant Pfeffernusse Haus (Gingerbread House) for the window comp (will try to send you a pic via FB, messenger or email) It came up very well and we're in with a chance to win (seeing as its made it into the paper and everything!) Enjoy the winter chill!
