After I published yesterday's update, Jean and I decided to go for dinner at a great little Thai restaurant. On our way there, a siren sounded and shortly thereafter a fire truck went by us. We got to where the firehall was and another fire truck left the hall, then a third. Sitting in the restaurant we saw 7 more fire trucks go by and then a hazmat truck. An 11th fire truck went by but it was parked at the firehall when we went back to the caravan park. We could smell smoke but couldn't see anything. Today, we read on the news that a building at the local sawmill had caught fire and burned to the ground. When we got to the caravan park, the owner asked us if we would be willing to move our campervan to a different spot as they were expecting several campers to arrive who were part of a reality tv show being filmed. One of the organizers was sitting at the table near our campsite so we talked to him and discovered it was our Maui campervans we had seen at Wellington and then on the ferry! They were busy filming an episode involving kayaking in Abel Tasman National Park and were planning on staying at our campsite that night. We discovered that they were taking the same route as we were and the final episode of their trip would be recorded in Queenstown probably at the same time we would be there. So, now we know the whole story. We settled down for the night only to be kept awake by more Guy Fawkes fireworks! That's 4 nights in a row! We left Motueka at about 9am and headed south to go through the Buller Valley to stop at Westport as we want to do a hike along the Fox river between Westport and Greymouth. We stopped at Murchison for a snack and Jean saw a building on which there was a sign saying Buller Gorge Jet boats. We checked it out and decided to try it as it had a fairly high rating in Rankers, the NZ version of trip advisor. It might just turn out to be the highlight of our trip! We had a blast! The boat operator was a riot and gave us a full hour on the river - he did at least 8 high speed 360 degree turns and took us through rapid after rapid. We got totally soaked as he was a master at making just the right turn to get us splashed. I recorded some of it on my GoPro camera so will look at it tonite to how well it recorded. The trip through the Buller Gorge was amazing also. It is such a beautiful valley with not so many twists and turns. There is a point on the road called Kilkenny's viewpoint where you literally travel under a rock overhang that was carved out of the rock. It is a 1 lane road and just after we got through it, a large truck came barreling along and he had the right of way! I sure was glad we were through it!!! We arrived at the campsite around 5pm. Sunni you would be most impressed with the kitchen facilities. Just like a commercial kitchen. The campsite is across the road from the beach. We are going to try fresh fish tonite for dinner.

jos I have never explored the west coast of the South Island, so appreciate your detailed reports! Guess you'll hit Pancake Rocks soon. First snow here yesterday! Enjoy the warmth while you can!
Sunni Those really are great kitchen facilities! The Top 10 campsites are really quite deluxe.
