Zvi Josef's Travels
First update - 11:00.
Last night, we wandered into the hugest supermarket EVER. It is located in a big mall by our hotel.
A lot of local residents were so intrigued by our Western look and constantly smiled at us, laughed and followed us around. We literally felt like celebs. :)
We had dinner at one of the hotel 4-5 restaurants and paid very little (100 Yuan, which roughly amount to 13US$).
Then came the night, which was a nightmare... .
The temperature in the room cound not be lowered to anything less than 25 degrees (while the temperature outside around midnight was apx. 35 degrees +95% humidity - unbelievable).
So, after complaining, a technician came and lowered the temperature by 1 degree. Yay. :)
Then we discovered there are no hot water in the bath (and yeah, we DID need a little bit of hot woter to take a bath). Problem solved in a very funny way - we informed the receptionist that we do not have hot water in the bathroom, and what did she do? She sent us room service with a cattle, so that we can boil water for tea or coffee. Oh, the language barrier. :)
Then we discovered that our blanket are designed for Arctic weather and not to tropical weather, so after not being able to fall asleep for 3 hours, we asked for thin blankets, re-arranged the beds' places and finally well asleep at apx. 3:30. G'night.
Breakfast today was ok and we are soon heading for Tien An Man square and the Forbidden City. After that, we're going to Silk Market, which is a famous huge mall, designed for tourists looking for clothing bargains. :)
The weather has improved a bit today - not so hot as yesterday (still VERY humid), so we're hoping to enjoy our day to the fullest.
The free Internet access at the Executive Lounge is great (PC + WIFI). We made Skype-to-phone calls home for virtually nothing. :)
More to come later. Cya!
Evening update - 22:00.
Had a semi-long day.
Took a train to Tienan-Man square (HUGE!!!) and then went and done the Forbidden City. Well, what can I say, for 60 Yuan a ticket (apx. 15US$) - I expected a little bit more. But hey, I'm not into temples and stuff. :)
Anyways, it was hot today, but about 5 degrees less than yesterday. Still, we sweated like mad ("Pitzot" all over, for ppl who know me...) and it was fun. :)
Later, we went to a place called "The Silk Market", which is the Beijing version of Bangkok's MBK (mass shopping center with ten of thousands of stalls and pushy sellers). Ami got a T-shirt. I got a headache. :)
Then we went to a "healthy" place which serves ice cream with wierd fruits (and vegetables...) in it - lovely (not really, no...).
Back in the hotel, the semi-problem with our a/c was solved, but now a new problem arose - somehow, the smell (=stench) of cigarettes (on our non-smoking floor...) suddenly appeared. Dozens of Chinese are now handling it and trying to solve the mystery for us.
We had an "all you can eat" buffet at the hotel this evening (150 Yuan = 25US$ - after a -50% discound we have - thank you "Advantage Plus" card...) - well, it was ok, but only ok. I guess after visiting Thailand and Macau last year, our expectations were high, too high... .
While yesterday we took apx. 15000 steps (yeah, I know, I took my step-counter), today, we reached 26000. Nice workout, I guess.
Tomorrow, we were supposed to go to the Summer Palace (aka - more temples), but since Ami has a sore foot, we may change our plans accordingly.
Well, enough said - heading for the lounge and pool for a final relaxation for today.
Talk to y'all soon. :)
