Oacaxa, pronounced wahacka, is a lovely part of Mexico. After the hustle and bustle of Mexico City it was lovely to get out here, despite the 6 hour bus ride it took.
After seeing ruins in the last place we have given them a miss here and instead have spent most the time wandering the streets checking out all the local markets and squares...this place has an amazing atmosphere, is very chilled out and friendly...the local square is always full of activity and there was even a free concert there.... we have had some lovely churrus, and then some not so lovely lunch at the local food market!!!...we have had no ill effects from it so far, so can't complain too much!!!Shane also decided to try the local delicacy, grasshoppers...coated in chilli of course!!!...in conclusion 'not the worst thing he has eaten'...so if he's making you a stir fry in the future, look out for a little extra crunch!
Today we decided to take a cooking class, due to Shane's small interest in food!!!....we got taken to the local market, where we bought some of the food that we were going to use...including maggots.....which I would NOT recommend!!!(by Phil)...Shane on the other hand clearly knows nothing about taste and says he doesn't mind them!!!!
We then made a 5 course meal, salsa, guacamole, tortillas to start, enchiladas with courgette flowers and cheese, ceviche of white fish, a lovely sopa tortilla....highly recommended,....and then chicken mole..which is that chocolate sauce again...so yes Shane now knows how to make it and will take orders upon his return!....and finished with a chocolate and mezcal ice cream.....mezcal is tequila for those of you who dont know!
All in all tasty and a day well spent!
We are now waiting our bus to San Cristobal.....just the 12 hours so we are hoping to sleep through most of it!!!
