We got a bus to take us directly over the border from Rio Dulce so it was another very easy land boarder. We got into the main terminal in San Pedro Sula and managed to find our next bus, with only a small bit of drama as we were struggling to find a working cash machine and we had no local currency!!!!
The only downside we found to travelling in Honduras is all the military check points.....We are not sure if someone has escaped or if this is normal for here but we got stopped 5 times on the way to La Caiba. Twice Shane and all the other men had to get out of the bus, he was even lucky enough to get a pat down on 1 occasion! Generally it was simply a case of smile and show them our passports.
Our destination was the coastal town of La Ceiba, gateway to the Bay Islands. We had chosen Utila as the island for us, so we needed to overnight and get the boat in the morning.
As you can see from the pictures it is a beautiful island but we were a bit disappointed with it. It is a 100% dive orientated island. Once you're not diving there is very little else to do there. We explored the 2 small beaches, one that was meant to be open but we had to sneak under a wire fence to get into!!! (which was well worth it as it was like having a private beach!!)
The highlights really were the treehouse bar and we stumbled into an amazing restaurant that had a hole in the middle of it where you could see the sea and a heap of fish, where we shared a great meal with our travelling buddies Dave & Berna!
Overall we were sweating madly in the humidity, getting bitten alive which was NOT FUN, so we decided to call time on our Bay Island adventure. We got to see a bit more of La Ceiba.....a better place than we had first thought....we managed a bit of budget breaking shopping.....2 tops and some shorts for 6euro....and then we had dinner which was an amazing grill!!!!...a heap of meat in a lovely bbq sauce with the usual sides...yum!!
Nicaragua was too far to go in one bus journey so we overnighted in Danli...didn't do anything here except entertain the locals when trying to order our street food! Luckily a couple of nice fellas came to our rescue so we didn't go home starving!!!
