Arrived in Shanghai at 8 this morning after a few broken hours of sleep. Caught the metro out to Nanjing East and found my hostel after a short search. The room was not ready for me, so I dumped my stuff off and walked (in the wrong direction initially) to Yu Gardens. The gardens were pretty and I could imagine they would be lovely in the summer provided no other tourists were let in! There was a temple next door - The City God Temple - which was worth the 10 yuan they charged for a look, and then it was into sightseeing hell. Many hundreds of souvenier stalls trying to sell all sorts of useless tat which I could really live without. Still, it looked very Chinese even if it was a bit staged. From here I walked back through the main shopping street Nanjing Lu and down to the site of the first National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party which was only good because it was free. I was exhausted by the time I got back to the hostel so I stayed in for a beer and pizza.
