I was feeling quite tired today and so decided to have an easy day around the city centre. I set off for a walk along the Bund and what should have taken me 10 minutes to walk to took me 2 hours of treking across building sites! I kept thinking I was going to get where I wanted to and only after an hour turned around and walked back to where I had started. The day didn't get better as when walking on the Bund, I got stopped by 2 women and a man who asked me to take a picture of the 3 of them. We got talking and they explained they were university friends who lived around the country now but had met up in Shanghai for a holiday. They said they were going to have tea and invited me to join them which I declined initially but after a little persuading (they seemed really nice!) I agreed. We went to a tea tasting shop and they translated what the guide was telling us into English for me. All they way through I felt I was being conned in some way, but they seemed so nice and they had even shown me the price list (although I didn't really understand what constituted a cup of tea since we were only getting thimble fulls), that I couldn't see it coming! After a few teas I said I needed to leave soon and I had had enough tea, but they said I had choosed lucky number 11 which means we have to try 11 types of tea. I said I really couldn't and so they agreed to change to lucky number 6. During the tasting they also brought snacks and then at the end they tried to get us to buy tea which the 2 girls did. Then the bill came. I almost fell off my seat as they divided it up and told me I owed 285 yuan!!! I told them I thought it was expensive, but they looked surprised and said that it was a performance and that's what you pay if you go to the theatre!! She only made tea!!! I decided it wasn't worth the effort of arguing and paid up. The 3 of them then walked down the road with me and I made some excuses and left. I still have no idea how the scam works but talking to some of the guys at the hostel later it seems I got off lightly - one couple said a pair they had met got done for 1700 yuan!! Felt pretty raw for the rest of the day especially as I had been saving for a starbucks treat! Went to the South train station this afternoon to try and get a ticket for Hangzhou for tomorrow but because of the holiday, I couldn't get on until the afternoon which is to late. Then went to Central Station to get my ticket for Nanjing on Friday. Have decided to go in the morning now to get more time there. I have seen everything I want to in Shanghai and Nanjing is suposed to be lovely. Went back to the hostel and found that Marta and Tanja (2 other people from the TTC training) were also staying there!! They were going to a club for New Year and invited me to join them but I wasn't much up for it so I just stayed in and had some drinks with some of the locals.
