Wanting to get straight out of chile we get a bus from Iquique to Arica and immediately get into an organised taxi to Tacna which is just within the Peruvian border. we arrive there about 8 our time but weirdly jump back 2 hours dye to the time difference. We get dropped off in a complete s***hole part of town and check into the first hostel we find. It's an expensive twin room but it has a tv and as we've done our research and found there's nothing here we've already organised our bus onto Arequipa the following day. We eat some suspect food, watch tv and go to bed. The next day we eat the same suspect food (the best of a bad bunch) and wait around for our midday bus to Arequipa. We arrive in Arequipa about 7 at night and get a short taxi to our hostel which turns out to be wicked. Nice friendly staff, big comfy beds, pool, ping pong, ps3. The perfect place to chill or party it seemed. We as always dump the bags and head out for a wonder. A couple blocks away is the main square and a couple bustling roads off it. As it's peru's third biggest city an it's a friday it has quite a good nightlife which excites us for Saturday. We grab some food and head back optimistic for our time here. It seems quite a cool place to spend the weekend. The following day we wake early and go for a wonder with a map. We chill in a park for an hour or so and mooch around the town. The weather is glorious so we're happy to just chill. We stop in at the point hostel (a south american party hostel chain) and ask what's going on that evening and they tell us the are throwing a party and we're welcome to come. Sorted, we pop to the supermarket or some food and drink and head back. We sink a couple of beers and crack into the Morgan spice and the evening starts getting under way. Once suitable drunk (Morgan spice went down a dream) we head out to the point for the party. Knock on the door and the guy let's us in... To a huge empty room with music playing. We told the guy his party was s***, not so much a party but a graveyard with a bar. It didn't phase us as we know about the strip of bars near the square. We headed there and found a happy hour bar serving 2 mojitoes for 3 quid. We try to take over the music, after half a Jay z he turns it back to the Peruvian music he was playing before. He boring so we leave. We wonder further up the road to find a club get in and order 2 beers. 2 beers are 4 quid, looking in the wallet we can't see it lasting and head back to the hostel quickly to get the rent money. Drink now, think later! We head back to the strip and end up in another cheaper club. We dance to the s*** music and head back to the hostel around 3 ish. Next day is horrid, the Morgan spice has rotted my stomach and hit me over the head with a baseball bat. We do nothing but a trip to the supermarket and play ps3 all evening. The following once Morgan has kindly left my system we decide to have a cultural day and go to the museum and huge cathedral. The cathedral was impressive but the tour was pretty boring. I don't like religion at the best of times let alone when a mumbling teenager is telling me about the types of cloth used in different priest garments. We only went on it to get on the roof to take some snaps of the main square. Soaking up the weather we spend the rest of the day mooching around town and chilling at the hostel ready to get picked up te following morning for colca canyon.
