Milford Sound is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places we have visited yet...and this was when it was so cloudy and raining for the half the day!
It was quite a way out from anything and although its only 85km from queenstown there is no direct road and you have to drive 350km to get there!!
The drive down was nice and although the weather wasn't great the mist and cloud made it look almost unreal and we both thought it looked jsut as good if it had been a perfect day!
When we arrived at the ferry terminal the weather had cleared so the views were amazing. We took a 2hour cruise around the national park and the captain told us that because it had been raining all morning the waterfalls were way bigger. He wasn't wrong! A few of us stood at the front of the boat when he drove right up to it and everyone got soaked!! We saw hundreds of waterfalls and some seals playing on the roack and swimming around which was nice.
We stopped off at an underwater obsevartory which was 10metres under the sea, there were loads of cool fish swimming around and a huge starfish!! We got back on another boat and headed back to the bus. On the drive back a lot of us all fell asleep as it was a full on 14hour day starting at 7.30am! When we did arrive back the driver was hilarous messing around as it was his 3rd to last day, he played the "wheels on the bus" and he kept honking the horn, opening the doors etc.... it sounds a bit childish but we were all lapping it up!! He was so funny and probably the best driver we have had in NZ.
