Well we made it to Fraser Island and survived the Dingoes, to be honest we didn't see too many of them, just a couple hanging around when we set up camp. They just look like skinny dogs really and they're pretty small, I reckon we could take one on if it came to it!!
Fraser Island itself is really beautiful, there are two amazing lakes here, one called Lake Mackenzie that's a massive fresh water lake, it's so clear and warm and we didn't see any fish or anything in there, it was perfect. The other, Lake Wabi, wasn't as clear or as warm but still amazing, you walk for about 2k over sand dunes then all of a sudden in the middle of them there is this lake, it's like a mirage. The camping side of the trip was quite an experience, it was pretty basic, camping on the beach with 3 man tents, setting up our own camp wherever we like, cooking etc etc, sounds perfect except when it comes to the washing/bathroom facilities.....there weren't any. I knew it would be basic but this was a bit too basic even for me and I've become very aquainted with my packet of wet wipes!!
The other things we did on the island included a place called Indian Head where you can look for sharks/dolphins/ turtles if you get up early enough, we got up at 6, no mean feat with Rich in tow, and headed up there but to no avail, we didn't see a darn thing, the water was too cloudy and full of seaweed. You can guess Rich was over then moon about getting up early and then not seeing anything!! We also visited the Champagne Pools, not quite as luxurious as it sounds, not a glass of bubbly in sight, it's just a rock pool where the waves come crashing over causing lots of bubbles!! Good to see but we couldn't swim as there was too much seaweed so Rich caught up on his sleep in the rocks!!
The group we went with were all pretty cool and easy going, usual mix of germans and english, we can't keep away from them. We had to drive ourselves around in a 4x4 jeep thing, I did not volunteer, I have enough trouble parking a car!! but Rich did pretty well for team Clements and didn't get stuck in the sand once.
The next place we're headed to is Airlie Beach, it's the furhest part of our journey, about 1600k north but we'll break it up overnight I'm sure.
